Default US Postal Service goes green!?!

    I discovered this http://www.usps.com/green/ yesterday.

They have links to calculate your "foot print", a calculator to figure out how much CO2 you save by not going to the post office, and "green" products.

At least [I]some[I] part of our government cares about the environment and is doing something positive.

Thanks for that link. I could save $31 a YEAR by not going to the PO. If only I could - I have to go there for mailing business packages.

~We get residential delivery. Personally, I don't need mail delivery every day. 2-3 times a week would be just fine by me. They could start by suspending delivery on Saturday. I'm pretty sure they deliver every day but Sunday because advertisers are probably their biggest clients. They could go greener by not accepting so much junk mail that delivery every day was a nessessity. Less paper waste, less gas used.~

We can also help them go green by receiving less mail. Stop receiving catalogs, get off mailing lists, opt out of the CC offers, etc. Hey, that helps us too!

Thanks fo sharing! I think I need to get rid of my PO Box now because I would be saving about 70.00 between gas and the cost of the box.

They have links to help cut down on the mail you receive.
I walk to the PO to get my mail 2X a week, it's about a 15 min. walk 1 way. I used to go more often but now do most of my business online.

If you print out your own postage on your computer, they'll pick up your packages so you don't have to make the trip. A freind of mind sells on ebay -- and her carrier picks up her stuff. I don't know if you have to call them first or what, but it may be worth looking into.

I hadn't noticed they had links to cut down on mail. Thanks.

I don't know -- I kind of look forward to getting my birthday cards on my birthday or whatever. I don't really want to wait longer. But my mail man walks to deliver the mail, I'm pretty sure that doesn't use much gas

Thanks for sharing the link. Now I will have to figure out more green ways of using or not using the post office so often.

I already pay and receive all of my bills (sans my CC bill, which I should cancel the paper version of) online. I don't receive many packages in the mail and when I do, I save all the boxes for either storing things or for putting unwrappable items in them for Christmas. When we're done with the boxes, we recycle them all.

Canada Post doesn't deliver letters on Saturdays but I did get a parcel, so at least they deliver large packages.

I found a few places that stop junk mail.

www.dmachoice.org direct marketing association, you can request to be removed from this list.

I found this one awhile back, its an article on stopping junk mail.

I have ordered things online in the past, and they start sending catalogs. I simply emailed the company and requested they no longer send any, as I do my shopping(what little there is) online.
