Talking compost bin from garbage can.

I made my compost bin today, it was really easy. I think the most important thing is to make sure the lid locks on nice and tight, because you need to roll the can at least once a week. I used DH's power drill to put the holes down the sides, put a layer of shredded paper, then some dry leaves and cut grass, and then my kitchen scraps. I think it will hold quite a bit, if it works well, I'll buy one more can, it will be great in my garden boxes.

I have been wanting to start a compost pile or bin, and the idea of doing it in a garbage can makes me

How would you know when the compost is done and ready to be used?

I used a rubbermaid trash can, I think as long as it locks really tightly you could use any kind, I have to say, it was so nice to take all those rinds I had from making a fruit salad today, and just dump them in my compost bin. I then laid it on its side and gave it a little roll back and forth..... so easy, you must try one. Another plus....not having to put this in the regular garbage, especially on these hot days.

Tammy if your can has handles, maybe a piece of heavy string or rope could be strung across so you'll be able to roll it, or one of those stretchy things with the hooks on each end? Can you tell I enjoyed the rolling part? lol,

I've had making a compost bin on my list to do for awhile. I've kinda been putting off for fear of attacting animals (bears mostly) - not sure if they would care about it or not.

YAY - we made our compost bin. So far we don't have a lid though. We will get one and use a bungie cord to hold it on. We're inside on a break.

We already have a worm bin. I am so excited. We have about 5 lbs of potatoes that are rotted we are adding to the new bin.

I think I can use the same things in BOTH the compost can outside (like a 55 or 58lb barrel) and the worm bin - small bin. If not please let me know.
