We Are Being REWARDED For Recycling
We just received a letter from our trash/recycling service that they are coming out with a reward program for recycling.
From what I understand, they drop off recycling cart and you throw everything in there....glass, newspaper, plastic, metal etc....yeah no more sorting. They take it back to their warehouse and scan the bar code on your can, weigh it, and points are added to your account.
You can go to their website and see how your points are accumulating and then with your points you can purchase gift cards to local retailers....the ones that caught my eye were Target and our local grocery store.
Sounds cool, can't wait to see how this all works. We recycle anyway, but what an added bonus!"We fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen; For what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal."

WOW!! How cool is that!!!! Helping the environment and getting rewarded too!!!
During the debates last week when the candidates were asked what sacrifices we should all be making now like they did around WWII, neither one of them really answered. What a great idea it would have been for one of them to say, we should all really concentrate on recycling.ANGIE

That's great. My local transfer station will take pretty much all recyclables for no charge, but I don't get any credit for them.

Pretty neat to hear about a rewards program. Maybe it will roll out to more places if this is successful in certain cities.

How cool is that? I remember the 1st recycling program I was in (approx. 15 years ago) I actually had to PAY to recycle!! Now I can recycle, but not a lot of different things, but they are getting better...

It'll be interesting to see how this goes. There are currently 13 states that do this now. I'm really loving the part about being able to throw everything into one bin.
It's not mandatory here for people to recycle, and I'm surprised at how many people DO NOT recycle. Hopefully this will get those people to do their part."We fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen; For what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal."

We recycle what we can at our transfer station. We burn what we can as well - cardboard, junk mail, ruined clothes that can't be used for anything else. That helps heat our house too - so double duty on that kind of thing.

That is interesting. So they actually take your can? Or do they scan it at your curb?
I told DH about it (he is a residential recycler for Waste Management) and he laughed and said that sounds like alot of work!
I think it is awesome that you can pick up gift cards for doing something you always do. And hopefully, it'll give some people enough incentive to start seperating out their recyclables now!
You'll have to let us know how it works!

We have curbside recycling so we don't have to take it anywhere. No rewards but I'm not hauling my stuff anywhere either.
