I just spent a few minutes on line, removing my name and address from junk mail, catalog, and credit card offer mailings. From the same site I also removed our listing from White Pages online, and registered on the do not call lists. Quick, easy and painless.
I would plead with you all to add your name to do not call lists, but not to be taken out of online phone books. If you are on the do not call list businesses can't call you. However, if you aren't in the actual phone books then people looking for old classmates for reunions can't find you. (I have just spent the last two days tracking down classmates for a reunion.)
I have gotten off a lot of junk mail lists. Unfortunately, most of my junk mail comes from charitable groups to which I have formerly donated. I have found that emailing them generally accomplishes nothing, you have to call them to get off their lists. Ironically, environmental groups kill a lot of trees pursuing me!
