    Default Earth Hour 2009

Is anyone participating in Earth Hour this year? I pasted some info below.

    http://www.earthhour.org/home/
    http://www.earthhourus.org/faq.php

    Turn out. Take action.
Be part of this historic event.
    March 28, 2009, 8:30 pm local time

    What is Earth Hour?

    * Earth Hour is World Wildlife Fund's global initiative where individuals, businesses and governments turn off their lights for one hour to show their support for action on climate change.
    * Earth Hour is a symbolic event designed to engage people from all walks of life in the climate change discussion to send a strong message to our political leaders that we want them to take meaningful action on climate change.
    * The largest climate event in history where millions of people around the world will unite by turning off their lights for one hour, Earth Hour, to demand action on the climate crisis.

Last year my friends and I were having our monthly potluck during Earth Hour. We lit candles and turned off the lights, it was nice.

My husband is a Electrical Power engineer and almost had a cow when he heard this yesterday. He thought it was beyond stupid because after the hour everyone is going to be turning on their appliances at once and the power surge could actually cause power outages. We said we would do it on a different hour but it gave me a good chance to tell the kids to cut back all the time and not wait for a certain hour.

I think the important thing is more to turn off lights, devices and such when not in use in general rather than just once a year. Maybe this will encourage people to do so (although I suspect the economy might be helping with that as well anyways).

It's actually just lights that are supposed to be turned out, not appliances. The Earth Hour website itself even says that it's OK to keep the TV, computer, etc. on.

Even just the lights it is the volume of people that participate. If everyone participates and all turn their lights back on at the same time, some equipment may not be able to handle the surge. I guess you will find out how reliable your utility is. Our transformer for our section of homes has already been on the blitz.
