Solar power and windpower are wonderful alternatives to living on the grid. The only problem is the amount of space you have and the your budget because ufortunatly it's not cheap to manufacture solar panels yet. Depending on your household usage to get solar set up will be in the 20,000 range, but you do get lots of rebates back and tax breaks from the government if you do install them. The windpower generators and pretty big and from what I've heard abit of an eyesore...but if you have the space, why now. Solar power works with big battaries that store the sun's energy and I THINK wind power is the same, but don't quote me. DH and I are saving our pennies to one day live off the grid...if the city you live in experiences power outtages you won't be affected because you have your own power. Very cool deal....hope this helps a bit!

I don't know about those particular systems, but we recently had a solar system installed.

You can find info about cost, rebates, and power generation on my blog here and here.

Getting completely off the grid is difficult because you need to store the energy you produce. We sell our excess back to the grid.
