Anyone follow a Nourishing Traditions lifestyle?
I'm slowly transitioning my family and would love to chat with someone.
Whole foods, a more natural way of feeding ourselves & our family.
Based on this book:
Nourishing Traditions by Sally Fallon and Mary Enig

I've incorporated many of the ideas in Nourishing Traditions since I purchased the book in 2001. It's just one of the many books I've used over the years to improve our nutrition. If you like the book, you might also like the information found at the Weston A. Price Foundation: The Weston A. Price Foundation
You can also find Local Chapters of the organization who share the philosophy and information if you need to find some like-minded folks to share ideas with: https://www.westonaprice.org/chapters/
-I soak nuts overnight in lightly salted water and dehydrate them before we eat them. It makes them easier to digest and the nutrients are more readily available.
-I use coconut oil and butter as our main cooking/baking fats. You can also get information about the science-based coconut diet in the book Eat Fat Lose Fat, also by Dr. Mary Enig and Sally Fallon.
-Sprouted grains, nuts and seeds are incorporated in our diet.
-I also make cultured milk (kefir and yogurt) and use them and the whey from these cultured products to soak grain or flour. I've used raw milk off and on. It's not always easy to locate a "safe" source.
-I make lacto-fermented vegetables occasionally.

Thanks Grainlady - I'm trying to get better at soaking. I need to plan my meals out better so I can incorporate that more.
I have not tried lacto-fermented veggies yet. I'd like to try this summer.
I'm really in the beginner phase. Learning all I can. We do use coconut oil in many recipes. I took a class on kombucha last week. Hoping I can get that going soon.
What kinds of veggies to you ferment? Do you use a crock? I'd love to hear more about that.

There are some great sugguestions here. Thanks for reminding me about the book Nourshing Traditions. I can get so caught up in one aspect of how I am trying to live my life more simply and with respect for my "carbon footprint" that I forget to focus on a certain aspect. While whole foods have become more the norm in my house - Nourshing Traditions is not one I have put much energy into. Thanks for the encouragement.
In the meantime, here is a great page regarding fermenting veggies. Someone posted a question from the book Nourshing Traditions, and the following is a very clear and detailed description of the "how to" process:

Thanks for that link to Wild Fermentation. I'm going to bookmark it and take a look at it when I have a bit more time.
I received my kombucha scoby in the mail today, I need to get busy brewing my tea! I'm so excited!

We started with The Maker's Diet and then read Nourishing Traditions when DH developed stage 4 cancer and it has definitely helped. We use butter, coconut oil and olive oil for cooking, soak grain and flour before use and make yogurt, and although we can't find raw milk in our area I do buy milk from grass fed cows. I have a crock of pineapple vinegar fermenting away right now. In addition to the books listed above I found these books helpful: Real Food by Nina Planck and Preserving Food without Freezing and Canning by The Gardeners and Farmers of Center Terre Vivante.

I'm brewing my 3rd batch of Kombucha. The 2nd batch has been the best so far. I'm hoping that my scoby thickens, last time it didn't seem to be. I'm so new at this I'm not sure what to expect at each brewing. I'll be taking them out and making new tea today so I can check the progress then.
I'm on Twitter and today Rebecca Wood became one of my followers. I had never heard of her before. Wonder if anyone else has? Rebecca Wood, Health Books & Recipes, Detox Diet From first glance, it appears she follows a NT lifestyle and has a few books. I requested them from my library. Just the Whole Foods book & the Grains cookbook. I was excited that our interlibrary loan service had them!
hestlauss - I'm sorry to read about your husband's cancer. Is the dietary changes helping him? Please tell me more. How long have the 2 of you been eating this way?
