Business/Corporation Waste??
Other than food, have you noticed a business or corporation being not so environmentally friendly?
The reason I ask is because DH and I were in Chicago, we went to see a movie at the AMC Theater. I went to the restroom directly after it was cleaned. Imagine my shock when I saw no less than 8 rolls of toilet papers (all with either 1/4 or 1/2 of a roll left) thrown in the trashcan.McD

Are there any corporations that do not waste stuff?
Bear in mind that being environmentally friendly, if it is on a company's radar at all, is merely a public relations "nice to have". It's fine so long as it comes second to making money. If ever there is a conflict between the two, guess which one is going to lose? Corporations really, truly don't care about the environment unless there is a propaganda benefit.
Pardon me for being cynical.

I think keith is right on! Cynical or not........is it still cynical when it is THE TRUTH?? If it doesn't figure into the 'almighty' bottom line....it won't be done!
And they are 'trained' to do that........and that would be okay IF they would let the workers take home the unused rolls (if they wanted to - however 'unsanitary' it might be) but they would probably get fired if they did that! REALLY SAD!
I wish they would AT LEAST do something about all the damn wrapping that things have when you buy them........even this little bit would help......and should HELP the bottom line!
A good 'case in point' is the case of Costco TP.........not only is it wrapped in plastic but then EACH ROLL is again wrapped in paper!! Is it all needed???

I used to work for a office cleaning company. The reason the toilet paper is thrown away is because it is more economical to only have a nightly staff to clean & replenish, rather then have someone on duty during the day to change out toilet paper rolls and such. Much more economical. They would be paying someone to stand by for when the rolls were ready to run out. We threw away half used toilet paper all the time, same thing with rolls of paper towels. It was mandated.
You should see what my son's employer throws away. It truly is a sin. Bag after bag of food that is ready to expire (sometimes months away from date), clearanced or discontinued products, all in the dumpster. They can not take it home, the company will not donate it for fear of being sued, and dumpster diving is illegal around here. You better not get caught, just because it was thrown away does not mean it's up for grabs. It's considered theft and you will be prosecuted if caught.~~~

Very interesting PP. Thanks.....and very sad.
Did not realize that D. diving was illegal anywhere..........not sure about around here.........seems stupid but...........again, probably some legal issue (lawsuits) that is to be avoided.....like some idiot getting hurt while IN the dumpster.........and then suing!!

I have to say that ours is pretty thrifty. You can actually get fired for being wasteful. We actually had a cleaning lady fired because she was wasting her supplies.
(Boss came in and she was pouring Mr. Clean in the mens urinals to clean them in lieu of the small amount of bleach she was supposed to use)
Of course, we are a small company with less than 300 employees. The boss has made it clear that the more money that is wasted the less money that is there to pay us.

In the years ahead, increasing competition, labour concerns and growing resistance to price increases will require organizations to manage their business with extreme efficiency. Organizations that do not take advantage of cost-reduction alternatives will be at a major disadvantage.

I guess my surprise is because the utility I work for is fairly resourceful.
For instance, we switched billing systems which meant we had to reformat our bills. We were left with a HUGE amount of old bills. Rather than toss them, we had them cut and bound into notepads to be used, so we don't have to purchase steno pads, post-its, etc. Our cleaning is done in house as opposed to hired out and we use minimal supplies, and even use the same trashbags for as long as feasible.
Perhaps part of my shock/frustration came from the fact that we spent $25 on 2 movie tickets and they were just throwing away perfectly good toilet paper.McD

Waste Management has made a fortune in charge of what the rest of the world does not want to think. Waste management is the undisputed world leader in almost all areas of waste, including low-level nuclear, chemical and cleaning and trash removal day, waste reduction and recycling. Waste Management has expanded its activities both geographically and technically, to acquire a number of suppliers of advanced plant trash-to-energy, pollution control equipment and recycling services, even if the signature of agreements with the municipalities of Buenos Aires, Hong Kong.

Ew.. that's crazy. Shame on them. I think we have a responsibility as consumers to let businesses know when we see waste that upsets us.
