Oragnic does not have to be expensive
An example (feel free to post your own!):
Homemade French bread...
- yeast $.07 (buy in bulk at Sam's)
- sea salt $.01 (if even that - buy in bulk at health food store)
- water $0 (we have a private well, so no water bill)
- organic flour $.90 (on sale $2.50/5lbs.)
That makes two loaves for $.98
Those loaves will be used to make pizza.
- 8-ounce can organic tomato sauce $.29 ($.79 minus 50¢ coupon)
- 8-ounce block organic mozzarella cheese $1.63 ($2.18 minus 55¢ coupon)
Grand total: $2.90 (that will be enough for all of us for dinner, lunch for me and ds the day after and a snack for dh after work)

Wow Kim you get really good prices on organic foods!
An 8 oz can of organic tomato sauce here costs well over $2.00 and 5 lbs of organic flour between $ 3.50 and $ 4 depending on where you get it!

Wow - that's hefty for the tomato sauce! The 5lbs. of flour is $4.79 regular price here (and it's even more expensive from the bulk bins
).
One thing that concerns me now though is our health food store has just started printing on their sale ads that they reserve the right to limit quantities purchased. *sigh* I hope that doesn't mean I am going to have trouble stocking up in the future.

I grind my own flour with my Whispermill. I can get a 50 pound bag of wheat berries for about $22.00. In the summer I have a small garden where I grown my own organic tomatoes, cucumbers, and bell peppers.

Kay - Is that what you pay for organic berries or regular? Where do you get them for that price? I sure wish our health food store offered being able to purchase a big quantity like that. No co-ops close to us either, unfortunately.

Kay, I'd still love to know if that's the price for organic wheat berries or non-organic and where you purchase them.
I've checked into a few places, but the s/h charges make it too expensive.

My price for organic is just a bit over Kays price for 50 lbs. Its $29.95 but I get 20% off for purchasing it in 50 lb. bags. I too use my Whisper Mill to grind it.
Kim I'm surprised you can't purchase it in 50 lb. bags. Have you asked if it comes in 50 lb. bags. You could freeze it if you couldn't use it that quickly. I'm just surprised because I would think they would get it in 50 lb. bags or possibly 100 lb. bags. I know here you can only purchase it in 50 lb. bags because thats how our health food store gets it. Even when I purchased it at a grainmill when we lived in Winnipeg before I had my Whispermill, it only came in 50 lb. bags.
Could you order it from Walton Feed?
We'd pay the same as Chriss for tomato sauce.
Organic tomatoes (canned) are approximate $3.00 a can. Thats why its so difficult to purchase everything organic here. Its also why I grow a garden.

Our health food store only offers you to be able to buy from the bulk bin - no special order (so no 50lb. bags, etc.). The berries are 89¢/lb. and sometimes fluctuate up to $1.19/lb.
We did have one health food store that had been here for at least 25 years, but they closed after the hurricanes unexpectedly (we still haven't found out why). Their bulk prices were cheaper (59¢/lb. for the organic wheat berries) and I have a feeling that they could have gotten large quantities for me.
I did check Walton Feed, but the s/h is a killer.
