Tell the govt to stop global warming.
I just did. Will you?

**********
When the producers of An Inconvenient Truth first approached me with the concept for the film, I was skeptical. Could we really take a slideshow about the climate crisis and turn it into a compelling movie? Davis Guggenheim’s Oscar win for best documentary and a second one for Melissa Etheridge’s beautiful song “I Need to Wake Up” was a testament to their ability, but it was also a testament to you.
It was you who packed the theaters and got your friends to go see this film, greatly increasing the audience. And then this past December, it was you who connected through MoveOn.org and AlGore.com to attend An Inconvenient Truth viewing parties. At those parties and in the weeks that followed, nearly 200,000 of you wrote to Congress, demanding that they address the climate crisis like the planetary emergency that it is.
Even though I have been a life-long movie fan, I didn’t really understand how big of an audience a movie could reach. And of course I never would have imagined in a million years that a movie that I was a part of would receive two Academy Awards—or one—or would have ever been made in the first place! As humbling as this moment is, An Inconvenient Truth will only succeed if it drives all of us to take action. That’s why I’m asking you to join me in the next stage of our fight. On March 21st, I'm going to hand-deliver the messages you signed when I testify at Congressional hearings on the climate crisis.
This is an incredible opportunity to demonstrate to Congress that we demand immediate action. And I need your help to really make this moment count. Can you commit to getting 10 friends to send their message to Congress through AlGore.com before March 21st? The more voices I can bring to Washington, the more powerful our message will be.
To get your friends involved, just forward them this note or direct them to:

There is no longer a debate about the fact that global warming is real. We're causing it. The consequences are serious, and could be headed towards catastrophe if we don’t fix it. And it's not too late. I don't want to imagine a future in which our children say, “What were our parents thinking?” “Why didn't they wake up when they had a chance?” And I know you don’t either.
The hundreds of thousands of you who signed messages to Congress showed me what's possible. Working together we can unite millions of people and build support for real action on a scale that has never been seen before.
Help me take the first step and fill up that hearing room with your signatures. That picture alone will send a powerful message.
Can you commit to getting ten more people to send messages to Congress demanding action to stop global warming?

I’m looking forward to working with you on this monumental task.
Thank you,
Al Gore

I think we need to do something more than tell the government. Like minimiz using gas or products produced by polluting companies. Right now CHina is a big source of greenhouses gases. Do we use cheap electonic products form them?

I think we all need to be responsibile for ourselves and our own "consumption" of fuel and such in regards to poluting the environment...that is a given...
But, as far as global warming...I don't buy into it as many are "selling" it. I was fortunate to study under one of the head research scientists for the National Weather Service. It was SO interesting...and informative.
My favorite "funny" was when a "team" of people trying to prove global warming tried to cross over some ice field and they couldn't make it because the weather was so harsh...blizzard, wind chill, etc. And it was some new record low.
Anyway...just wanted to point out that not all scientists believe in global warming...and Al Gore isn't a scientist to begin with.
Here's a news bit about it:

Always good to look into different views...I worried about global warming, but after meteorological studies, etc. I learned that temperature rise/fall is cyclical over decades/centuries. Humans do have an impact, but it is negligable in the grand scheme of things (from NWS data/scientists...too much to explain in detail).Kace - married to Dh 12 years

Frugalalaskan I totally agree with you. We all should do our part. Keep our eyes open for ways for US to make a difference. Small yes but with everyone trying it would make a difference. I think that global warming is in cycles and yes we do add to it but not as much as people are saying.

As one with a Native American heritage -- I'm all about honoring and preserving mother earth-- however, I don't subscribe to the entire theory of global warming either.
Like was said previously -- too many scientists hold the opposite view.

Sorry(not really) Al, don't buy into it Oh Mighty Father of the Internet. Global warming hitting us tomorrow with record breaking cold temps. Yeehaw.
OP, I will continue to do what I can to be kind to the earth. That is always a good thing.

There are natural cycles of the earth and at first even I was skeptical of global warming considering the ice ages and then melting periods of the past. However, there is evidence that we've beat out the "natural" cycle of the earth and it's much worse now.
Also, global warming doesn't mean it's always warmer, so cold temperatures do not disprove the idea. With global warming, the earth's natural cycle is messed up leading to all sorts of weather extremities.
Finally, even if you don't believe in "global warming" it's hard to think that all the gases that we pour out of our cars, factories, houses, etc. that were not on this earth for the billions of years of its existence and are suddenly present in the last 100-200 years or are NOT making a difference. There's no way that this huge shift in how 6 billion people live on earth now could not have some effect.
In short, believing in the hype or not, we should all still be very conscious of the damage we could be doing.

You're right..."global warming" doesn't always mean it'll be warmer...there are cycles to most everything in weather. But, yes...the NWS study did conclude that humans have a very small impact (not "no" impact...just small). I honestly don't remember the numbers...it was like a 2 or 3 percent overall impact. I wish I still had a copy of that study/report! It was SO interesting!

I think if we just all do our best to keep our consumption of things down - be it driving our cars or buying things we don't need (after all, buying a piece of plastic junk we could do without just tells the factories to keep pumping out all that garbage because it's selling). I think us gals at the Village are doin' pretty good!
We all seem to group our errands to cut back on driving, re-use as much as possible, use natural cleaners like vinegar and baking soda (hey, they're cheap and they work!), buy in bulk (cheaper and less packaging), etc. Let's keep up the good work!
Oh, a good book on reducing use of resources and having less impact on our planet is "Living More with Less" by Doris Janzen Longacre. It really opened my eyes to the wasteful lives we lead in this country...we've ended up cutting back on consumption even more than we had before I read it. (But I still get weird reactions from washing out ziploc bags that other people give to us - hahahaha).
I agree with you acidcookie...we all need to do our part!
