Default Questions for all you Vegetarians.

Ok I have a question for you all you vegetarians out there. I have not eaten meat as in red meat, chicken, or pork in awhile months really. I occasionally still eat fish, I still eat eggs if there are organic and drink and eat milk products.
The other day I made chicken I still cook meat for my DH and DD. I ate some and got very ill. I was the only one so I know it was not food poisoning. So my question is it normal to get sick when eating some meat after you have not eaten it for awhile?

My sister doesn't eat beef either, and rarely pork.
She gets sick, too, I mean really really sick when she eats beef. She was told by someone that she is probably 'allergic' to beef. This goes back to when she was a kid. She would eat a bite of beef and it literally grew in her mouth. Instead of her saliva breaking down the beef product, it got bigger so that it was almost double the size of the piece she originally ate. She can get by eating pork, but she has to be really careful because sometimes it doesn't agree with her either. She's just figured that it's not worth making herself sick over meat.
She still eats fish, chicken, dairy and eggs, but mostly veggies.

When I decided to go vegetarian my doctor and my nutitionist both told me that it was very possible I would become sick if I went back on meat. I was told that it was highly likely that I could be sick for up to two weeks. So, to answer your question, it is normal to get sick.

It is very normal. Your body adjusts to not eating meat (or in my case was always used to not eating meat; I was raised vegetarian) and so of course will have a hard time just adjusting back to eating meat all of a sudden. It's as if it's unsure what to do with it. I've heard people having more success when they get there gradually, like starting with chicken broth.

According to my mother the nutritionist, it not only is normal to get sick if you do not normally eat meat, but giving even a small amount of meat to a lifelong vegetarian can make them dangerously ill. Basically, your digestive system has modified it's chemical production in such a way that it can no longer break down the animal fats and proteins appropriately. So be careful!

I am a former Veg. I was "tricked" into eating meat one time. They thought it would be funny to show me that I could eat it with no problem. I didn't eat very much but about 20 min later I spewed!! It took me all night just to feel better.

Thank you for the reply's. I guess that from this point on it will be much easier for me not to eat meat knowing how sick I would be getting. I am trying to go vegetarian anyway's.
