Question Other than recycling, how do you help our environment?

Have you ever thought of ways other than recycling to help our environment? Have you helped in any cleaning up projects such as river banks, etc?

Tell us about it and what your experiences were?

The children and I walk quit a bit, on our walks we carry bags, one is for picking up trash and 1 is for finding natural items for our crafting. We started composting a couple of years ago and try to treat each living thing and it's habitat with respect.

I personally don't use aerosol cans for hair spray, whipped cream, deodorant, etc. There are plenty of environment free alternatives. Also, when you get a six pack of soda, before you throw away that plastic ring, cut the rings with scissors. When the sea gulls and birds get into the landfills, etc., the rings get caught around the birds, injuring them.

We use all natural dish and laundry detergents- that way I'm not screwing up my septic system as well as the environment. We use organic fertilizers for our garden as well as save all our kitchen scraps for compost.

We use dish towels and kitchen cloths instead of buying paper towels (but we do use paper napkins at dinner and to drain bacon and such- but we only use a couple napkins a day, so it's not that great big a deal). Instead of using chemicals to clean my floor, I just use ammonia and water. I have spray bottles for homemade cleaners.

I figure every little bit helps!

I think all good things begin at home..... If we want a better place to live, start at home, teach your children respect for other living things and their habitats.... What good is all the work if we don't pass it down... That's how we got in this mess in the first place....

Cigarette butts really burn me! We live at an intersection and everyone throws them out the window. Because we are on an incline, everytime it rains, the butts come down onto my sidewalk.
