Question Have you ever thought or adopted an rare animal?

This coming school year, I'm looking at adopting a rare animal for the kids to help teach them in regards to taking care of our environment, whether its recycling or adopting a animal at the zoo, etc.

Has anyone done this and whats your experience? Here you can adopt an animal through the zoo in the city. Not the best alternative, but one that at least will be able to take more part in.

    Thoughts.

My son's class in second grade adopted a manitee, it was the coolest thing, *seeing we lived in maine and the manitee was in floriday.* they received a letter telling them all about it, what its name was what he did, all kinds of things. We don't have a zoo here to adopt anything. BUT I do have DAH If you want him in the place of a rare animal.

We used to volunteer for a group that rehabed native California wildlife. We had to have a permit because, it is illegal in CA. to keep wild animals without one. Our goal was to care for their needs and then return them to the wild. We had squirrels, possums, and many differnt types of birds. Members of the group also had fawns and even badgers. Our children really enjoyed it and learned a lot too. It was a great deal of work though. We may get back into it when DH retires.

When I lived in Florida we adopted a manatee. I sent regular donations and also had a manatee plate which gave a percentage to the Crystal River refuge. If I had my way they would not be boating on inter water ways during the winter months - but those folks paid the bills I guess.

Now that we are here in the frozen north, we donate money each season to the local zoo.

Dd is going to adopt a polar bear with some of her Christmas money.

We haven't yet, but plan on doing this next year (out of our homeschooling budget). We will adopt a humpback whale or a dolphin from the Pacific Whale Foundation to start and then will look into zoos.

Here's a link to a list I posted in the homeschooling forum a while back.... Adopt An Animal
