    Default This Is Disgusting!!!

But I guess its no different than the diet most Americans eat. Still, how will this affect the quality of our meats?

Actual this diet is probably closer to the diet that small farm families would feed their pigs. I always thought that pigs were actually feed 'slop' - leftovers from the family table mixed with some type of grain or corn cobs. They didn't compost - just feed it to the pigs.

The whole thing about feeding cattle this does make me cringe. Cattle are grazers....

Corn is a starch and most of the 'scraps' that they are mixing their grains with are also starch or starch based foodstuffs. I don't see that it is a huge deal. I can tell you from an ag related business owner that the farmers need the price of corn to stay at around $4 to break even most years. I know it's putting the pinch on other industries such as meat producers and the ethonol industry as well since they have to pay for the corn too.

I do not believe these animals were meant to eat this type of food( different types of starches break down in bodies differently- plus a starch that contains vitamins and minerals is different than a starch that doesn't) . This is creepy.

And this is one of several reasons that DH and I are going to start buying organic meat this weekend. If it were up to DH we'd go totally vegetarian but I do like my chicken and an occasional steak. It'll be pricey but we'll be eating more vegetarian meals and less meat meals to help with the price difference.

Maybe it's not "human grade" food but all the stuff they've added is stuff that people eat. Personally I can live with the trail mix being added but it can't be good for anyone/anything to eat chips and choclate bars on a daily basis.

This stuff isn't going to make the livestock sick, so I don't really see a problem. As long as it's got enough nutrition to keep them growing and it's not giving them diseases it's fine. The food they eat isn't going to be passed on to consumers, as it's already been digested, the nutrients absorbed, and the waste expelled. The pigs are getting fat (which is good, whether you like the word "fat" or not), the ranchers are saving money, and the consumer isn't being effected. Works for me.

Ughhh- forgot to add, does anyone remember the big stink about the "animal by products" that were/are added to the food of our meat animals? It was/is making them sick.I can't help but think that the very thing that people are eating that we know makes them less healthy, is what we are introducing now to our meat supply.Packs on the pounds, but less healthy?( Ya gotta love the hormones they pump in, won't be long until 6 year old girls are full breasted.)Yadda, Yadda, yadda.

I saw that on tv (about the cows) and it did bother me. We have a 10 acre hat field and an empty barn. Dh and I decided after this story and freading about the hormones in beef to get our own cows. Even if worse comes to worse and I find I can't eat them I can sell the organically raised cows to someoneelse and buy other organic beef I've never met with the proceeeds.

    Default Comercial Animal Feeding Practices.

I have to agree that the thought of animals eating old people food seems a step up from feeding them roadkill, other downed animals, plastic pellets and even their own feces as many factory feedlots have done in the past. If you think this is bad you should read "Diet for a New America". You'll be very, very careful about where you buy your meat afterwards... if you keep eating it at all.
