Question Food waiting to be taken to the compost bin..

What do you do with it? I'm too lazy to go and take leftovers to the compost bin every time so I tend to take them out every other day. But I still haven't figured out what to do with them and I get tired of looking at a plate full of leftovers sitting on the counter. What kind of a system do you use?

We used an old plastic tub with a lid, or you can use a coffee can. We just dump it in and take it out every couple days.

I used to use an ice cream bucket with a lid, but I'm really lazy and could never be bothered taking the lid off to put stuff in it. Then I got out an empty 4L water jug (square one with handle) and cut half the top off. I just stuck scissors in the hole, cut down about 2" on each side then across the front, so the front half of the top is open and the back half still has the handle. I was very proud of my little invention, I can hold it with one hand on the edge of the counter and just scrape peelings into it, and it's much easier to dump.

We have a plastic bowl on the counter with a grocery bag inside. When I cook I open the bag up so that I have easy access and then when I have finished just close it back up.

My mom has a porcelain pot with a lid that she keeps her compost in (it's about the size of a large coffee can). She keeps it next to the kitchen sink and they dump it out on the compost pile when the container is full. I live in an apt. building and we don't have a compost pile here (I am sure it wouldn't be allowed.)

I used a coffee can. One day dh was cleaning the kitchen and put it under teh sink. It got pushed to the back and I started to notice a bad smell. I though something died under the cabinet. I made dh search for it and when he opend the lid to the coffee can we found out what that smell was! NASTY!

We use 32 oz yogurt or sour cream containers.

I also use those to put yucky garbage in the freezer. I take it out when the boys do the garbage (the day before the garbage truck comes). It keeps animals out of our garbage can and makes it a little less stinky for the guy on the garbage truck.

I keep ours in a icecream bucket in the fridge. The ants are horrible where we live so if I keep it on the counter we get infested.

We use the red plastic folgers coffee cans with the lid and the handle molded into the can. We put the chicken food scraps in one and the banana peels, coffee grounds, etc in the other.

    Default food compost bin

I keep a plastic container in the freezer. When it is full I take it to the compost. This has really cut down on the ants and the smell.

Well thanks for the tips, I have started to put the scraps in an empty ice cream container and put it in the fridge. We started getting ants (never had to deal with them before grrr) and hopefully this will help.
