I'm usually out with my kids so we don't give out much candy. I wouldn't make homemade treats however, 'cause they'd probably get thrown away. I never let my kids eat them unless a friend made them.

i will buy using coupons sales etc
i am sure you are a very safe cook etc but
i wouldnt let my child eat anything that was home made unless i knew the person very well- just as i am cautious about who i let them get in a car with ; friends they play with etc
in fact its all over the news every year to not allow your child to do that so most probably will not .
i dont know how clean their kitchen is how they store stuff etc etc
also for people with food allergies they have no idea exactly what is in it anbd alot of non nut foods have possible nut allergens in them because of the factory its made in .
my 13 yo has had allergic reactions twice from a new seafood/ shellfish allergy in the past 6 months - once from food that had no seafood but was cooked with oil that had cooked seafood in it - once just by petting a cat that ducked under its mixed seafood dinner and got some of its oil on its fur an hour prior - next one could be a full blown anaphylactic .
to be honest for me its is not that much cheaper to make myself once you add up ingredients costs - compared to getting on sale or with extra care bucks back deal.
and if it wasnt going to direct friends and family i am sure it would be tossed out and thus wasted - which is no savings at all.
an idea if one wants to avoid candy is oriental trading company online you can get little toys etc - i have heard of people using toothbrushes they got for free using coupons during the year and saved - stickers - etc.*~Debbi~*

Handmade - and yes, I let my kids eat handmade treats as well. . . I won't take them somewhere where I don't trust the person giving the treats!>>>>
i think alot of that has to do with where you live.- a city where peopel arent to friendly or farm areas where not alot of walking goes on yeah you take them to those you know.
when you live in a small town with 6-10 houses on a street ( x 4 to make the whole square block ) and alot of blocks one after another where we may knwo a few on this or that block its hard to know everyone that well even though you wave hello etc.
i have no idea what their kitchen looks like .
and its very rude to just pass by a sweet old lady sitting on her porch with a bowl of candy enjoying all the kids costumes because she lives 5 blocks away and you dont personally know her .
some people can know everyone in their town some even if its a small town still dont know but a small % personally .
another instance of what is out one persons back door isnt the same as is outside anothers .
that said halloween - and 4th of july are big things in our town - very fun and family oriented... there is a family that rents a popcorn maker every year and pops it in their front yard and scoops itout for you ( kind of hand made but right in front of us ) and the neighbor hands out juice boxes.
i get to see parents from town that my older adukt kids went to school with their kids and we get to see how our younger ones are growing . its like a big walk around and say hi to everyone party .
i put a bowl of cheap candy like dum dums lollipops out that says take one while we are walking with the youngest and*~Debbi~*

We just enjoy Halloween in general. It's 1 hr. per year. We don't even know any kids anymore. DH and I always consider it a way to give back. When my DH traveled I just gave my neighbor my bowl to pass out too. I don't consider it right not to pass out if your getting.JMHO.

I give out the candy I wish I had received as a child. That does not include popcorn balls, or any other homemade junk. Candy is king. Also, as others have pointed out, a lot of people won't let their kids eat homemade items.

I remember when I was a kid in the 70's and I got apples, popcorn, homemade cookies.
I love the homemade Halloween treats but it is only for family and friends.
I give out store bought candy and to the little ones I give toys.
I wouldn't let my children eat homemade treats and I have to believe other parents work the same way.
At least kids can still trick or treat - it is a cherished tradition.

Yikes, I'm sorry about the misunderstanding.lol. I should have clearified that I meant making homemade treats for your own kids......just a little secret....we hide on Halloween to avoid handing out treats. Not trying to be mean or stingy, but for us, candy is too expensive for our budget

our first year here (small-town vermont) we thought we had enough candy....then they started swarming, DH had to run out twice to get more ~ the last couple stragglers got homemade chocolate lollipops cause it was literally all we had left in the house. Don't know what we had that first year, but the 2nd was 366 kids...CRAZY! Last year, we bought some bags of Dum Dums for like 2/bag at Walmart and used those, (of course the one year we had enough candy, it rained all night..lol). i was one of the only crazy people out there with my little one (and I'm nuts, I was dressed like a clown!).
Love the idea of doing something at home for my little guy as I try not to let him have too much candy (he's only 2), but he really likes cupcakes, so maybe I'll do that for him.

Home made treats for the family. Will not be passing out this year. Will hit the candy section when its 50 to 75% off. I use the candy instead of buying chocolate chips . Make sure you start watching for coupons because around the first or 2nd week of Oct. Coupons will be for M&M'S,Hershy minatures ect.
