Don't carve the pumpkin, paint it. Or buy some foam ones and carve them, and re-use them every year. Can even get battery "candles".
Spice scented candles for the house. Cocoa with cinnamon sticks. Pumpkin bread.
Last year I made a felt leaf table mat from these patterns: Free Fall Felt Craft Project - Felt Autumn Leaves You only need a 1/8 yard piece of felt from the fabric store (each piece will end up being $1-2, even though felt is $12-15 per yard). Even people who don't sew can do this.
Get cookie cutters from the dollar store, make simple sugar cookies and have a decorating party.
If you sew, make a flag, wall hanging, or lap quilt.Use it up, Wear it out,
Make it do, Or do without. ~unknown

Love Halloween!
I'm with you on starting early this year. Last year was a blur, and we had DSs bday bash that day, so double whammy!
My fave thing that helps me quip into my Halloween mode are candles. I love Yankee Candle Pumpkin Spice! Candles itself are a major Fall thing for me. Pumpkin pie baking, cookie decorating, having the kids get involved help me too. Have fun and hope you share some ideas!

Silk leaves-we use them in our preschool and teach the students about leaves falling down- we through them all over the place!!

Halloween is my absolutely favorite holiday (was married on Halloween!).
Some suggestions (besides the cool foam pumpkins you can carve and save for the next year) is sew up some pumpkins. (free if you use scrap material). Or paper mache.
Have made skeletal hands from hangers, masking tape, and spray paint - THEY LOOKED FANTASTIC
Use the boxes from the post office (free) to make headstones
Get sheets from goodwill or someplace (actually the more stains the better
) and put "blood" splatters and hand prints
Silhouettes in the windows are always cool
Pumpkin pie candles are fantastic but it also reminds me of Thanksgiving and Christmas - the one scent that ALWAYS reminds me of Halloween is Candy Corn
Trying to evince the cool weather etc is just a state of mind - do what you would have done, eat what you would have eaten (we have chili or garlic soup <called Vampire Bane for the special occasion
> You are wanting the nice relaxed atmosphere, sit back, have a fire, make s'mores drink hot chocolate - have fun no matter the weather!

I you can get your hands on some indian corn and small gourds you will have nice decorations that will last through Thanksgiving. Craft stores will have fall leaves, hay bales, fake carving pumpkins, scented candles, fake cob webs, etc., that you can display in your house. You can always set up a scarecrow outside, maybe with a flamingo on its shoulder.
