    Talking Halloween

I admit it, I am totally cheating this year!
My DD wanted to be a cat, my best friend's DS wanted to be Garfield but she couldn't afford the materials... so now it's 2 generic

    For DD -
    Black sweatpants
black sweater with a faux fur collar (bought at a children's consignment)headband with ears and a bow (took some very thin elastic and extended the bottom of the headband to go under her chin to hold the bow in place.
tail to be pinned to her sweater with a thin elastic and Velcro to use as a belt to hold it in place.

    For her DS-
    Black Sweatpants
black sweatshirt turned inside out, tags cut off
orange fakey fur bought at JoAnns to make a 'spot' on the chest and cuffs of sleeves
black winterhat with ears sewed on
    tail (same as DD's)

Draw the whiskers on with my cheap-o Halloween eyeliner, tadah.
We are wearing witches hats (from many years) and we both have leashes to put our 'cats' on.

    Total cost for 2 costumes - $5.00

Your costumes sound sooo cute!! Good job!
For many years I made all of my kid's costumes. I do not know how to use a sewing machine, mine has been sitting in the closet for 10 years, still in the box. I sew everything by hand. It is very time consuming, but I love it. Some of the ones I made are:
Clown (from some striped & polka dot fabric, ruffled neck piece from a large scap piece scrap piece) Did not use a pattern for this one. Just measured son and cut away. It is kind of hard to mess up something that needs to fit big and baggy.
Cat (from some furry rug type fabric got on discount table. This was a hard one to sew, very thick)
Cows (these were easy- white sweatsuits with black felt cut into odd shapes and sewn on. Tail from scrap white piece sewn on back side. - head pieces made from black and white felt with face holes cut out) Wearing the felt head pieces were very hot!! Kids were sweating.
I also made a couple of other odd costumes, like daughter was a Christmas gift one year - used large box and suspender type straps, ribbon and paint.
Did a fairy princess twice by using tights, leotard (sp?) and made a cape and skirt.
Bubble bath from balloons was a fun one and a cool homemade Batman.
I am so jealous of all of you still have kids young enough to trick or treat. I loved making their costumes and going out for all the goodie getting fun!!

Someone has their thinking cap on. Great ideals, and even frugal at that. Job well done.

My kids are all older 20-17. But they still dress up to give out treats. They always want to be something dead. lol I love doing there outfit and make up.
this year I get to do some of the older kids in the neighborhood. I sew and redo everything by hand too.

Two years ago I made my daughter a Tinkerbell costume. It was from a pattern and could have been very expensive to make but I found the perfect lime green silky material in the Walmart $1/yd box! Last year my cousin's daughter wore it and next year my youngest daughter will wear it!
