Sigh...DD7 has cooties
My little one has cooties. (headlice - I just think cooties sounds a little nicer)
I have treated her twice and am still finding them in her hair.
Yuck, yuck and double yuck.
We've been through this before but I have never had so much trouble getting rid of them.
I am annoyed because the school did a check Thrusday afternoon, sent home several kids in her class and never notified the parents.
By Friday evening I pulled 30 live bugs out of her hair - how could she have been bug free 24 hours previously?

The "cooties" are becomeing resistant to the medicated shampoo. It won't kill the bugs most of the time anymore. It just gets them stoned. .... and if you miss a single bug or egg the cycle starts again. I worked for years with residential children where this became a constant struggle when the children would return back to us from home visits. I feel for you. I can not even begin to count the number of heads I've picked. YUCK!!! Good Luck!!!

This did work for a friend of mine. Give a try
But you can get rid of head lice once and for all. and vinegar can help.
The Vinegar Man recommends the following way to treating the infestation and preventing the recurrence of Head lice.
After shampooing, rinse the infected area head thoroughly with white vinegar. The acetic acid in the vinegar will dissolve the glue holding eggs to the hair.
Use an over-the-counter head lice preparation to kill the lice. Be sure to read and follow the directions carefully.
Rinse the hair thoroughly once again with white vinegar to dislodge nits.
In order to get rid of all remaining lice eggs, you should use a fine-toothed comb to comb out the entire head of hair. Take you time and do it well.
Repeat treatment using the de-lousing preparation in seven to ten days. If you still find nits, rinse with vinegar again and comb the hair thoroughly.
To prevent reinfestation, wash and dry your clothes at the hottest temperatures possible. It is the heat rather than the soap and water, that kills the lice.
Soak the combs and hair brushes in hot water which is at least 150 degrees F.) for at least five minutes.
Vacuum pillows, sofas, chairs and other upholstered furniture as well as carpets, mattresses, and even car seats. Then dispose of the vacuum cleaner bag far away from your home. Better yet burn it if possible.
If you have followed these instructions carefully you should be frre of these itchy little devils for a while.

Aww, hugs. A few years ago, my older 3 girls got a case of it & I used olive oil - it smothers the adult pests. I didn't use the chemical shampoos b/c I didn't like the idea of using pestacides on my kids. After the olive oil, I went through their hair 2X a day - sectioning, picking nits & baby lice(from the eggs that were missed) - i did this for 2 weeks & all of the girls have hair to their butts...I must have spent nearly 4 hours a day getting rid of the cooties...but we succeeded...without scissors

we do the cholesteral treatment.
buy the queen helene's cholesteral. smother the hair and put on a shower cap. leave the shower cap on for several hours.
then rinse hair really well.
take a fine tooth comb and get the nits out.
repeat in one week.
not only does it kill the lice, but it is also good for the hair. i have done this for years.
my kids, because our public system is whacked, get them about twice a year. get this, our public school system, allows kids in school with nits. so, me who makes sure all nits are gone from the hair, is punished, because some parents won't take the time to get the nits out! burns my britches, that does!

I've also heard of mayonaisse --REAL mayonaisse, not miracle whip or some of the other new jar, cause the stuff in the fridge is COLD. Cover all of the hair with it and then a shower cap, and leave on for 4 hours, (but not while the kid sleeps, because if left on a long time, they could touch the mayo, then their mouths --and the mayo may have gone bad.) It will take 2-3 shampoos to get the mayo out. It smothers the lice. Do it again in a few days.
Also Vaseline in a pinch--same thing, cover the hair, ALL of it. leave on 2 hours under shower cap, then use BABY OIL to break down the vaseline, and then Dawn dish soap to get the rest out. Maybe more than one wash. Repeat in a few days.
Pitch the shower caps after.
I agree with taking care of ALL fabric surfaces your daughter is in contact with--sheets and pillowcase, sofas/chairs (spray maybe?) and her clothing.
My sister's girls had lice a couple of times in their gorgeous long blonde hair. She got it gone after treating all of the sheets, etc. , as above. Good luck!

you should also bag up all stuffed animals/dolls in an airtight garbage bag..leave them there for at least one week.

My DDs had lice when they were little girls and I used the olive oil treatment as well. It worked great. But you do have to repeat every few days and comb through the hair again also. My oldest DD has enough hair for 3 people and it was down her back then. Both had long hair. It was "heck" on earth, but we conquered the lice! (((HUGS)))

When my sister got head lice at school the only way she could get rid of them was to dye her hair.

If you rinse their hair in vinegar every day, they won't get lice. Also, if you use hairspray in their hair, like pull it up on a ponytail and then braid it and then spray everything with the cheap hairspray (like the kind we used in the 80's to get big hair).

Make sure you vacuum everyday. Wash every brush or comb, curtains, ponytails, sheets and pillow cases. etc Oh and it woundn't be a bad idea to check and treat other family members.
Those fine tooth combs don't work. I would section the hair and pull the nits out with your fingernail like outside. Start from the nape and move up. They mostly love that part and get heavy around the ears. I would still treat with something like Rid and follow up with that and also use Olive Oil.
That will kill the critters but you have to follow up because they lay eggs..(ugh I forget where my cosmetology book is now) like very often.
Dead nits will come out of the hair very easy. The live ones you will have to pull one by one. Slide down from the hairshaft.
Good luck. I've been through this with a couple of kids. Spring and summer is the worst time for them.

You guys are great!
I treated and picked last night and will pick again this morning, I called ino work and told them I would be late. I have to take her in to theschool nurse and get her checked before she can go to school. We will do the olive oil thing tonight. I love that idea!
