Default Health Insurance Not Insurance Problem...It's A Health Problem!

The health insurance problem is not an insurance problem, it is a health problem .

When people start talking about health insurance reform and how to bring health insurance to the American people, they inevitably end up in a ridiculous discussion about how to negotiate the cost of drugs, how to provide drug discounts to senior citizens, or how to engage in a system of managed care that denies medical services to certain groups. It's all a rather useless exercise in shifting paperwork, blame, or money from the pockets of one organization to another. And in the end, it helps no one.
Health insurance reform needs to focus on the health, not the insurance, because you can never solve a problem by shifting paperwork to another party or bu denying services to an ever-expanding group of people. It's similar to the way in which the federal government wants to solve social security: just keep raising the qualification age until it's so high that almost nobody lives that long. How's that for security? "If you live long enough, we'll even pay you back all the money you worked for!"

    Countrybumpkin... thank you!

My proposed solution in that 'thread' was to do something so radical but similar to the concept that they're not looking at the BIG picture....

I recall there was a country that did this. I just can not for the life of me recall which one. But I'm thinking like Holland or something. Whatever country it was - was one of the countries that pushed euthanasia before it became mainstream. HOLD YOUR BRITCHES! that's NOT what I'm suggesting.

When you are born you are given $xxx, xxx.xx in healthcare dollars. (I don't know what the figure was or should be- so just go along with the concept)
When you go to the doctors, it's taken out of your balance. This $X dollars needs to last your lifetime.

When it runs out... it runs out. That's it. Everyone has one final request for euthanasia if you so choose.

SHOCKED! yes! I was too. But let's take a look at that.
If you knew that choices you make today will (and they WILL) affect your health when you are older- thereby using up your healthcare funds sooner than your life has ended- would you choose to do that- eat that - smoke that- drink that?

    I didn't think so.

This type of plan not only forces people to take responsibility for themselves, their life, and their health (and not place the responsibility on hardworking-made-the-right-choices-citizens).

Wait! I know what you're thinking.... What about "unusual can't help it diseases" like cancer. Well... guess what.. the citizens banned together to ensure that the food grown for the people are of high quality, the chemicals are nill, the GMO- nadda. Finding effective wasy to reduce the cancer rate. THAT's taking care of the group. But before you can create a group- you NEED to take responsibility for yourself first.

I know... what about people who have lost a limb- had an accident of sorts. That falls under... "if you knew that your healthcare dollars were limited.... would you 'do' that." (drive fast, reckless, drinking, whatever).

Wait! what about all the other diseases? Yes, human diseases happen. You will have healthcare dollars to pay for it. Not to worry. Everyone is entitled to healthcare.
If you couldn't, wouldn't or didn't make choices that enhanced your health and you use up your dollars.... well there's always your own pocketbook or your final request.

Take Diabetes for example. Type I. You need insulin. You will have insulin and you will have the medical care to help you manage your diabetes. But the difference will be... you are MOTIVATED to make sure you take extreme care in your health, make choices that better your health - cuz the dollars are dwindling.

This solves the 'everyone should have healthcare' side
and solves the 'I don't think it's right that I should have to pay for your ignorant choices' side.
and solves the 'I feel so bad for everyone' side
solves the 'just shoot me and put me out of my misery' side.

In the country I speak of... the mentality was... that nobody wanted to be a burden on society. How's that for a novel idea.

Frugal Nurse, I have been following that "thread" somewhat and I did not see your proposed solution over there. This is exactly what I would propose as well! You and I must think a lot alike.
    Thanks for sharing this here!

It's going to take something radical to change the system ~ and it until that comes along, it's all window dressing. I like your idea, FN, but until the mindset changes, it'll be a struggle.

Thanks for your posts, ladies! I have (and will continue) to enjoy them

From whom would the starting money come?
If you could kick in the pants the person responsible for your problems, you wouldn't be able to sit for a month.

Did you know that a 4 year student paying $20,000/year who finances their education graduates with over $103,000 in debt to start? But a student who works and pays cash and takes 6 years to graduate ends with $6,300 in their pocket! So much for "getting a head start by financing!"

Just take it from Oprah Winfrey. She's a do- gooder with lots of money to spare. As long as she kept talking, the pot would be funded. It would give her a chance to really put her money where her mouth is... so to speak.(Disclaimer.... Keepin it lighthearted now.)
