Do you concider your period to belife interrupting?
When i was pregnant my OBGYN asked me if my period interfered with my day to day life. First thing that popped out of my mouth was no.
Later on while talking to my mom about it she goes hun you get life interfering periods. I never considered them interrupting because i never had to stay home from school or work because they pained me so badly.
When i was younger i used to curl up in bed under comforters even in the summer trying to get warm, because #1 cramps were grinding my guts and #2 i was freezing to death with a clammy sweat. I always felt nauseous and got the runs. Feeling in general like i had the flu. Of course always ate more right before i got it and always more chocolate. Wouldn't know why. It is still the same, but i can't go curl into bed all day with a good book. DARN!!

I really don't feel mine disrupts my life, it's just an annoyance every 3 weeks.
I was also the same way when I was younger, but finally have outgrown it for the most part (I'm 31 now, LOL)

Yes, mine were definitely life interrupting. But that is because I suffered w./ endometriosis, ademyosis, fibroids, and ovarian cysts. I had to be on a script that required me to take it 3 days before my period started (hard to do when you are irregular) or I suffered greatly. There were times when I literally had to crawl the stairs to get into bed. I would black out as well.
I finally had a hysterectomy, but I did suffer like that from the time I was 11 until last year like this.
If yours are that bad, I would have the GYN look into causes. They can tell a lot with an ultrasound these days.
Your symptoms (the flu like ones) sound like a very elevated progesterone surge right before, which is actually kinda normal. But if the pain was enough to make you retreat to bed, I would have them look into it.
Good luck!

It didn't used to be so bad. However, the older I've gotten, the worse it's gotten. A week or more of tenderness before and moodiness
(DH and DS give me a wide berth) THEN, two or more days of flow that reaches what seems like epic proportions. It's really not abnormal; it's just very heavy. So, yeah, for about 8 or 9 days a month, my life is definitely interfered with.

I read an article once that sad that there was research that showed that a woman's perception of her period could affect her physical symptoms. In other words, if she thought of her period as a "curse" or "yucky" that she was more likely to have painful cramps, etc. If she thought of her periods as just a natural part of being a woman and that there wasn't anything yucky about it, than she was more likely to experience very few negative symptoms.
I have only ever had one or two uncomfortable crampy days in my life. I was on the pill for a long time in my 20s so, that kept a lot of my symptoms to a minimum of course, but since being off of it, I haven't had any problems. Never has my period interrupted my life. I think they just ask those questions in order to sell you more perscriptions. Pills where you will only have a period like once every 3-4 months if at all.

Not always, but sometimes. Especially if I'm going away or if I plan on flying.
" May we never let the things we can’t have or don’t have or shouldn’t have spoil our enjoyment of the things we do have and can have. As we value our happiness, let us not forget it. One of the greatest lessons in life is learning to be happy without the things we cannot or should not have."

I don't know if this has anything to do with it but since I've started exercising three to four times a week, I don't get PMS anymore (especially the extreme fatigue) so now I don't find it interrupts my life

When I was in high school I would say it was definitely an interruption to my life. I worked at Wal-Mart and can remember laying on the floor in a ball crying while at work. I'm not one that whines about pain much so for that to take place it was a shock to everyone, including myself.
My doctor "diagnosed" me with enodmetriosis, but I found out later she was wrong. My periods are fine now, and I only get some pain the day I start, I am also on the pill though.

That was me exactly.......I would get cramps so bad that they "blinded" me......seriously!! (I thought it was normal, that everyone had pain that bad, so I never really thought anything of it, till I started trying to get prego and seeing lots of doctors) I had what the doctors called "off the scale enodmetriosis" and seiously painful ovarian cysts......beleive me, a ruptured cyst is definitly a feeling you could go your whole life without having to endure....ouchie momma.....I had it happen multilple times a year.....anyway, I had my total hysterectomy in 2005 at age 34....life is good now!Last edited by IntlMom; 07-23-2008 at 08:50 AM.

The first day I have a little crampage - seems to be worse if I'm on my feet all day. Other than that they're not too bad. Been irregular here the last few weeks (48 days between the last 2). Before I had these recent problems I was usually every 29-30 days. Last one started on June 24 so hopefully starts soon. Maybe getting my thyroid under control will help??

I had a similar experience at the Dr.'s office. He was doing my early exam and stated that he "thought" I "might" have fibroids and we could do a partial hysterectomy, leaving my ovaries intact. I jumped at the chance.
Mind you, there was nothing wrong with my uterus. He was looking to increase his income and relieve me of the inconvenience of my monthly period. It was a win/win situation as far as I was concerned. The hysterectomy was done vaginally, so no incision. I had insurance, so my cost was next to nothing. I had plenty of sick time built up at work, so I got paid to be at home.
I still am thankful to the doctor for that one. The only regret I have is now that I'm around menopause age, I have no way of knowing if I'm actually in menopause or still in peri-menopause.

they never used to then I started having kids. its gotten steadily worse with each pregnancy.
that along with severe ovarian cysts and ovarian tumours. I agree....ruptured ovarian cysts are no fun, I'd rather go through drug free childbirth - it doesn't last as long.
I'm well medicated now for the cysts and the tumours were removed. its not as severe anymore painwise. but now the flow is scary heavy, like a faucet really for a week. then one day its turned off.
I cannot wait for 'the change'
but my doctor and gyn are considering a full hysterectomy if the cysts continue.

My periods never bothered me at all. I barely bled, had no cramps. It was almost as if I didn't have a period. Then as I reached 35 things started to change. Loads of pain, fibrod tumors, endo, the works. Eventually my periods became so bad it was like I was in labor for 3 full days. The bleeding was so heavy that even if I had been able to leave the house I couldn't have because within 15 minutes of heading out the door I would have bled throgh my clothes. It was just awful, I thought I was going to end up having it all taken out.
What saved me from surgery was CrampBark tinture. I ordered it from my health food store. Now every period I use crampbark. What a lifesaver! No more cramps. If I feel even a twinge I reach for the CrampBark tinture and poof! GONE! Love that stuff!
I hope you find relief soon,
Polly
