quitting smoking
My husband and I both need to quit smoking. And unfortunatly our insurance doesn't cover ANYTHING, so we're looking for a good way to break a very bad habit. TIA

Cold turkey.
It takes 21 days to make or break a habit and if you can get to day 21 without smoking..not even a puff..you have an excellent chance of beating this nasty habit.
It won't be easy..but it will be worth it and I suggest taking the money you would've spent on smokes in a jar on the counter where you can see it and where you can watch it GROW like wildfire.

what state do you live in?
Reason I ask is because I found this link through our health and welfare site.
http://www.quitnet.com/
and in our state they pay for you to quit smoking! you take a little quiz and it best determines your medication, patch or lozenge or whatever. and they send if for free. check it out, I was wondering if it worked in a different stae

Wife2lt,
We are also going to try to quit. We've been saying this forever, but with me being so frugal, it is such a waste of money. My husband is on board as well. We have 3 packs of cigs left which will last until Friday, then we will be quitting cold turkey.( I know I should just throw them out now, but I hate to waste them, doesn't that sound stupid!!LOL)
I've done it before, I can do it again. I just have to get myself in the right mindset. What worked for me last time, was actually not telling anyone I was quitting, then I wouldn't have the constant pestering of people asking me how it was going. It would make me want to have a cigarette even more!
Hubby tried Chantix months ago and couldn't stand the strange dreams he would get from it. His parents on the other hand used Chantix with no problem and have been smoke free for over a yr.
We just have to do it and get it over with.
Good luck to you!Mandy

Thank you. I think I'm going to go cold turkey. I think it's a habit for me. The minute I sit down at the table on our porch, doesn't matter what time of day it is or what's going on I automatically grab my cigs. I think I'm going to move the table away, I think I just need to change my routine. My dh on the other hand he likes and craves them so I'm thinking he's going to have to find a way to treat it. I don't know. My mom smoked for well over 40 years, and she got hypmetized (sp). And it worked for her she's been smoke free for about 7 years and doesn't even crave one. I know what you mean I have 5 packs left and I hate to throw them out either.

It's mostly a habit with me too. I can sit for hours in place that I can't smoke in and not even think about it, but as soon as I'm in the car, I light up. Getting a break from the kids is also a big one. I go on the back steps and have a cigarette just to get away for a minute. Definetly need to break the habit part the most.

It is amazing what insurance won't cover these days. You would think it would be cheaper in the long run. Blah!
I did the cold turkey thing and it was just 'mind over matter.' Next month I will celebrate my two years of not smoking. October was a happy month for me for several reasons.
I had to not step foot on my deck or even grill or sit at my table on our screened in porch. I related that space with smoking, even football, and my neighbors.
I am hear to tell ya that if I could stop....anyone can stop.
I still love the smell of a cigarette and the outdoors. I am weird, I know. Like when I am sitting in rush hour with my windows open and I smell the smoke and crave it. When I get super stressed I tell my husband that I want one but won't give in and I have not!!
It's a hard road and not easy at all......but there is a light at the end and that is what I grab and makes me happy to be in control for once.
Good luck.

Cold turkey and lollipops. That's what worked for me five years ago.
But, honestly, it wasn't that hard to quit. I had been wanting to quit for some time but never even attempted because everyone said how hard it was so I kinda figured why set myself up for failure. kwim? The first 72 hours were the worst... 3 days, that's it... just time on a clock...and the physical addiction is beat.
