My kids and their eating habits
When we visit family or friends, they can't get over my kids' eating habits.
Why is that?
I mean, I have taught my kids to eat what is good for them, drink what is good for them, and to do so in moderation.
So when we go to a family function, people want to know why my kids are not going straight for the junk food like the other kids. They want to know why my kids head straight for the veggies. Uhhh, they like those things! duh!
But why should I have to explain that my kids just like to eat right?
On a side note, my daughter Sierra, got a prize this week from school.
They are doing this thing in PE where they walk around the track. So many laps gets you a prize. Well Sierra did 38 laps and the teachers were amazed. She did not walk like the other kids, she ran them. NO she did not do them all in one day. But still for a 4th grader, that is pretty good. So instead of the normal prize that the rest of the kids got, she got a whole week without homework, a free hat day, and the teacher bought her lunch and she got to sit with the teachers during lunch and talk with them.
I got a note from the teachers saying that they were really impressed with how she held the conversation around being healthy and even chided one of the teachers for eating two brownies in one sitting! LOL
Told him that all that sugar would catch up with him one day. (that's something I tell them) lol

That is great that you have instilled healthy living values in your children. People ask me similar questions about DS, he prefers veggies, salads, etc to junk food, although my DD (who eats healthily at home) tends to go straight for the junk when she is out @@.

The only thing that I don't like that they do at gatherings and such, is the soda. But you know what, they only get that every so often anyway, I have quit complaining about it and just shrug it off.
Oldest DD has her own apartment. I went there the other day to visit and was snooping in her cupboards. I was surprised at her food choices. She had no junk food. I was happy!
But she likes to bake, and had a lot of ingredients for an army of sugar fiends. She said that she was baking somethings for some friends. They pay her to bake cookies and cakes for them! lol

I say good job as well! And I'm with you on why family members question, I don't understand it either. But people in public even freak out in restaurants seeing a kid wanting veggies instead of fries or something. My son (11) he's the same way as your kids. Doesn't like junk food too much and LOVES the veggies especially broccoli.

Here is a typical week's worth of veggies and fruit that I go through in a WEEK:
two things of broccoli
two bags of carrots
at least a 3 lb bag of apples
two bunches of bananas
oranges
grapes
grapefruit
tomatoes
cucumbers
onions
this is just the fresh stuff, not counting the frozen stuff that i use when cooking

Good! Not being a parent, I often wonder (too loudly, perhaps) why/how parents can shovel junk into their kids faces. I'd like to say that no kid of mine would eat a hot dog, which basically consists of salt and fat, or be fed cookies or gallons of sugary drinks. It's good to see that some people care about what goes into those growing bodies.

Good for you and your kids! Your children's eating habits sound exactly like my kids. Dh and I have been complimented on our childrens healthy eating habits since they were toddlers. They both prefer fruits and veggies to any sweet hands down.

If you ask my kids what their favorite foods are, 1/2 of them will tell you fruits and the other 1/2 will tell you salad with Mommy's dill ranch dressing!!!!
They devour veggie trays like it is the only food on earth and I catch them out picking and eating the fruits and veggies in the garden all the time!!
Good for you to teach them babies right!!!

DH and I were talking about this, this morning.
He said that he knows that Halloween is coming and he wanted to talk about what we were going to do. I said same as last year. The kids pick out the candy that they like, put it up, and then the rest is ours! LOL

My hubby has what he calls, "the candy tax" It's basically his way of picking through their candy to get what he likes to contribute to the "gas" spent on taking them trick or treating LMAO
I think I average 1 package of sweet tarts each year, I don't care for candy at all! Now if people were giving out fresh cantaloupe or watermelon that be a different ball game all together!!!Proud wife to Randy

Good... I am not the only parent that does that. My guys scarf down veggie trays. They love fruits and veggies. They have been taught to eat a balanced diet and they enjoy eating like that. They also know now to eat a lot of junk.
My sister gives me crap all the time because my guys eat veggies and healthy food so well (while she buys hers soda pop and junk food).Beak-1996, Toad-1998, and Q-1998

Mikala spent the night with a friend on Friday. She came home and the first thing she grabbed was a can of pears and the cottage cheese.
I asked her what was going on, and she said, Mom, I just want some fruit. lol

My kids will eat sweets and like it when mommy bakes, but they also eat tonnes of fruits and veggies. My daughter (almost 8) is starting to make whole grain cereal for breakfast (from scratch) and generally grabs fruit as a snack at home. My middle one's favourite food is avocados - high in fat, but she needs it and my youngest prefers soups with lots of veggies (but goes for potato chips and chocolate if I ave them in the house). My MIL cannot get over that my kids eat stir fry, veggie beef soup (heavy on the veggies), lots of cooked and raw veggies, sweet potato fries, etc. They love peas and carrots fresh from the garden. My mother figures I should let me kids eat "normal" food - sugar laden processed food instead of the whole grains and veggies and fruits we eat. My daughter was treated to a little pop over the summer (sugar sweetened as she does not tolerate high fructose corn syrup) and though it was grand, but gets it very little. We still eat too much sugar, but I do add in lots of fruits and veggies to the baking as well to try to help a bit and we generally limit to one sweet (cookie, muffin, etc) per day. The free range snacking is the fruit bowl or the cut up veggies.
It's interesting how parents think. When we moved into a new neighbourhood a few years ago, I ran out of candy on Halloween. I expected ~40, we had over 100. I ended up giving out Fruit-To-Go bars - the ones that do not have additional sugar. The kids loved it and told all their friends - they were actually excited to get something that wasn't candy!Updated January 4, 2012
