Vitamin D To Fight Those Aches and Pains
I just received this in an email. Just passing it on here. Our family takes 2000 IU's of D3 every evening. Even during the summer months while being outdoor's in the sun.
Fight Winter Aches and Pains with Vitamin D
It’s no wonder many people feel achy and sore, and sometimes tired and depressed, during winter months – they’re often not getting enough vitamin D. The body makes vitamin D from the sun’s ultraviolet rays, so it’s known as the sunshine vitamin, but this source is in short supply throughout late fall and winter.
According to an extensive review of clinical research in a report from Pain Treatment Topics (http://Pain-Topics.org), inadequate vitamin D has been linked to a long list of painful maladies, including bone and joint pain, muscle aches, fibromyalgia syndrome, rheumatic disorders, osteoarthritis, and other complaints. Lack of vitamin D also has been implicated in the mood disturbances of chronic fatigue syndrome and seasonal affective disorder, or SAD, which are more common during winter.
Author of the report and editor of Pain Treatment Topics, Stewart B. Leavitt, MA, PhD, notes that for many people sunshine is not an ample source of vitamin D during most of the year and the few foods containing the vitamin do not provide enough of it. “In our review of 22 clinical research studies persons with various pain and fatigue syndromes almost always lacked vitamin D, especially during winter months. When sufficient vitamin D supplementation was provided, the aches, pains, weakness, and related problems in most sufferers either vanished or were at least helped to a significant degree.”
The report mentions the following important points:
Vitamin D is a complex nutrient that actually functions as a hormone to benefit numerous body tissues and organs, including bones, muscles, and nerves.
A surprising majority of persons in many parts of the world, including the United States, do not get enough vitamin D from sunshine or foods.
The currently recommended adequate intake of vitamin D – up to 400 IU per day in children and 600 IU per day in adults – is outdated and too low. According to the research, most children and adults need at least 1000 IU per day, and persons with bone or muscle aches and pains could benefit from 2000 IU or more per day of supplemental vitamin D3 (also called cholecalciferol), especially during winter months.
Vitamin D supplements are generally safe if taken as directed. They interact with very few drugs or other agents, and are usually not harmful unless very high daily doses – such as, 50,000 IU or more – are taken for an extended period of time.
Vitamin D supplements are easy to take, usually have no side effects, and typically cost as little as 7 to 10 cents per day.
In conclusion, Leavitt stresses that vitamin D should not be viewed as a cure for all pain conditions, and it is not necessarily a replacement for other pain-relief treatments. “While further research would be helpful,” he says, “extra vitamin D should be considered for all persons in late fall or early winter, and especially for those who have developed aches and pains, or fatigue and mood disorders.”

Hey CB, what do you think about the safety of the supplements? I thought about tanning, but it's such a huge pain in the butt...

Nishu, I think that as long as it is the type that your body makes, which is the D3, it is very safe and very beneficial to do so. The only probelm I have with some supplements is that they can be synthetic and have a lot of toxic fillers added to them. Most people do not realize that synthetic supplements can be just as harmful as if they were to take a prescription drug The body will treat them as an invader. That is why I am very fussy about what kind of supplements come into our home. We take Carlson 2000IU softgels. I would be worried about tanning because of the electromagnetic output. Also the damage that could occur to your epidermis if you don't have a high antioxidant level. I know what you mean about being a pain in the butt.......I used to do it years ago.

Well, maybe the move to sunny California is helping more than anything. That and his change in diet over the last year.

Nishu, Here is another article that was just posted several day's ago on Naturalnews. com
http://www.naturalnews.com/024687.html
Nishu, when you see an article like the one you just posted, you have to wonder and ask yourself, was this study funded by Big Pharma? And also, studies that are funded by them never use natural supplement's, but alway's the synthetic form. Remember this too, it is alway's Big Pharma's mission to keep the public in the dark and to flat out lie and distort the truth. They don't want us to be healthy because they lose $$$$$! They try very hard to scare people! And that is what I am talking about when I say I am very fussy about supplements. The synthetic form will do harm! They are no better than taking a drug because the body does treat them as an invader. Nishu, let me get back with you here and post some more links and let me locate a new book that has been released that was written based on reputable independent studies . The M.D. who wrote this book is an an expert on Vitamin D3 and uses it all of the time in his practice with amazing results. Hope this helps, Nishu:-)

Wow, thanks for all that good info on vitamin D. It's such an easy supplement to add into a daily routine. And it's necessary for the absorption of calcium in the body, so it's important in so many ways. You can often also find vitamin D in a calcium-magnesium supplement. The site where I get my supplements, seacoastvitamins.com, has great prices too.

So, I went ahead and got a supplement. It's a 2000 IU and I've been breaking them in half until I can get a chance to talk to the baby's doctor. She's supposed to be taking a vitamin with D in it as well, so I don't want to overdo it.
Anyhow, I've been taking it for about a week. Some of you may remember I've had some horrible body aches and pains for the last year. I've had numerous tests done and so far they've found nothing much, but she did say my D levels were slightly low and I'd probably benefit from a Calcium+D supplement.
Well, this may be completely random, but my pain has drastically decreased. There's a chance it might be just a random remission, but for the past few days I've been feeling really good. I previously had a lot of pain in my lower legs, and I can't even remember the last time I felt that. I still have a little pain in my arms. Maybe that will go away, too? I'm cautiously optimistic. I've tried diet changes, adding fish oil, magnesium, to name a few, and nothing has helped that much. I hope this sticks!~Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.~

Just in case anyone's interested, I found a Vit D supplement at Target today in gummy form. They're indistinguishable in flavor and texture from actual gummy candy- in other words, they're really good. I'm going to send a bottle with my husband when he goes underway next time, and next time I go in to see the pediatrician about giving the girls a gummy per day. (Bottle says it's for adults.)
They're 500 IU's per gummy, and it says to take two a day.~Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.~

Mahalo for all of the info in this thread - definitely will try this. Even though we live in Hawaii, there are days when we are not outside a lot. DD goes to school in Missouri and definitely needs this!!
