I need advice on a weird dental issue...
~A couple of days ago our very-soon-to-be-six ds sprouted two new teeth behind his lower front incisors. He has an appointment on the 31st but I'm kinda freaking out and I can't wait that long for more info. The new teeth appear to be small and his original baby teeth are strong and in place. From what I read this may be called 'hyperdontia', which is growing too many teeth. Do any of you have any experience with this? What can I expect them to do for my ds? I'm just really upset that he might need to have oral surgery...:nervous: ~

Are they adult teeth that are growing in behind the baby teeth before they fall out?
My son's adult teeth came in this way. The baby teeth eventually fell out and the adult teeth moved into the right place. No intervention was needed.

I have one that did that too!! He is 10 and has only lost 8 teeth, the front top and bottom four. The bottom front two baby teeth had to be pulled out because the adult teeth grew in behind the baby teeth. The poor kid was in pain.

~They just popped through so we can't tell how 'big' they are yet. Although DH just checked again and they seem 'bigger' today. I just can't find info on the internet about different ways permanent teeth come in. DH and my teeth came in the average way; a tooth falls out and one slowly grows in its' place. Do you happen to remember how long it took before the baby teeth fell out? This mommy stuff makes me a nervous wreck, lol.~

Don't worry about it at all. It happened to my son and the dds just pulled the baby teeth. I think it's actually quite common. My oldest ds has had MANY dental issues and I know it's not fun. When the dds pulled the teeth, he did not need to put my son to sleep, he just gave him a little gas and said that he needed to "wiggle" some teeth because the tooth fairy wanted to come to our house. It really was not a big deal at all. They came out easily, too.

Even if he has an appointment on the 31st, I would call the dds tomorrow and see if he needs to see him earlier b/c your son is in pain.

~Thank you so much for finding that Patty! Shark teeth is exactly what we were calling them. You all are making me feel so much better. I don't know what it is lately but everything that happens with the kids sends me into a panic.~

No problem at all! Just glad it helped. Don't feel bad about the "panic", I think mothers do that often when its something wrong with a kid. We just worry ourselves sick over little things, and its just a "mom" thing.

I hope you can get him in earlier so the dentist can take care of things and you can put your mind to rest, especially if he is hurting. I'm sure it will work out OK. My 6 year old ds hasn't lost any teeth yet either. Sending you mom to mom hugs!
Keep us posted on how things go, OK?

We went to the dentist and he pulled out the baby teeth. No numbing, nothing... He just pulled them out. Q was so happy at the prospect of being out of pain that he didn't need any meds or shots or anything. My guys are also pretty tough though and they aren't afraid of the dentist.
And, his teeth that were behind the baby teeth did eventually moved to where they were supposed to be. It did take a while though.Beak-1996, Toad-1998, and Q-1998

My dd had this happen too, but I don't recall her being in pain. The baby teeth were a little loose, so the dentist just let them fall out. She later wore braces (upper & lowers were all crooked!) and now her teeth are picture perfect and healthy.
We teased her a little bit that she was turning into a shark!
Are your son's baby teeth even a little bit loose?
