    Question High Triglycerides

I went to the Doc this week for my 6 month checkup. I have high blood pressure and take meds for that. I had a fasting blood work done. So the Doc calls me today and says everything looks good except my triglycerides are really high. He wants me to take fish oil twice daily and come in for another check in 2 months.

I've gained some weight since I quit smoking last year and he accounts that for the change. My question to you ladies is, is there anything else I can do to bring my levels down?

    TIA

More exercise and eating better is what I was told. Fewer saturated foods, more fruit and fiber. WebMd or one of those sites it bound to have better suggestions than I do.

One of the things I've heard why people can get high triglycerides is from simple sugars and alcohol. If he wants you to take fish oil, you could also do some flax seed and some almonds. Almond butter is so yummy!

    Best of luck to ya.

My triglyceride levels were very high a year ago and my doctor wanted to put me on meds for it but I didn't want to so she told me I needed to change the way I eat and take fish oil. I lost 60 lbs, changed my eating habits and dropped my levels to the normal range. I limit my carbs and I stay away from a lot of processed stuff. I eat lean and green mostly but have those days where I'm not so good to........moderation is a key!!

    Wishing you the best!!

My dh had consistently high triglycerides also then he went on a healthy diet got rid of all the junk sugary foods and he lost 25lbs and his triglycerides went down too so that might help you. Don't eat any potatoes or starchy foods either they change into sugar in your stomach. Eat alot of fruits and veggies & salad your body will thank you for loving it!!!! He makes fruit smoothies for breakfast. Omega 3's are good start I take 1 w/each meal. Exercise is a must he jumps on the mini trampoline everyday if we don't go for a half hour walk w/dog. Hope this helps you!!!

    Try Apple Cider Vinegar!!!!

It is an amazing alternative health supplement that does great things for your body! It will lower cholestoral and triglycerides and it also is a weight loss supplement, so might help with the weight you gained while quitting smoking!

I've been taking it for a few weeks now, after a friend started sending me some articles about it, and now even my DH is taking it. Get the kind that says "Organic Apple Cider Vinegar, with the Mother" (which sounds weird, but it just means that it wasn't strained, so it contains the pulp).

The stuff tastes horrible, but I've found that mixing 1 TBS with about 2 ounces of OJ, completely takes away the taste of the vinegar (just don't sniff, cuz it still stinks). I do this 3-4 times a day. It does a great job of supressing my appetite, so when I sit down to a meal, I don't eat nearly as much as I would with out it!

Here are a couple of articles about it, some are kind of "hippie and alternative", but the facts are there! And it is approved by the FDA for lowering cholestol, treating obesity and treatment for Type 2 Diabetes. So, I feel better about taking it, since the FDA recognizes that it is safe!

This is one of the weirder articles:
    http://www.alternative-health-group.org/vinegar.html

    http://www.earthclinic.com/CURES/cholesterol.html

    http://www.diagnose-me.com/treat/T170577.html

I would ask your doctor about it. When I was at the doctor for Bronchitis the other day, I told my doctor that I was taking it, and she got excited. She told me that she took it herself, and it is one of the best supplements that you can take for a whole slew of things. I would look into it!

Lower the fat in your diet and exercise. Whe you monitor your food, pay no attention to the little lies on the packages.(Crafty FDA tricks) Use a simple formula. Look at the total number of fat grams per serving and multiply it by 9. (A gram of fat is nine calories.) Then divide that by the number of calories per serving, and you will find the amount of fat in each serving of food. For example opcorn is a lowfat food.Only two grams of fat per serving, on those famous boxes.Only 35 calories a serving. But if you do the math(2 times 9=18, divide by 35, you get .51. this food is 51% fat!!!!Sneaky!!! You will get very good at this as time goes on. My favorite is butter and margarine. Two calories, less than one gram of fat per serving. (How much less?) Follow the formula.1 times 9 = 9. Nine divided by 2 = 4.5 .......450 % fat!Oh yummy. I am surprise that your doctor did not offer suggestions other than fish oil. Crimey.

Gripey had very high (dangerously so) triglycerides and it was mainly because he was drinking lemonaide all day long. Sweets of any kind raise your triglycerides so limit sweets and simple carbs most of all and they will go down.

I had the same problem, and brought it down by cutting sugar out my diet and eating lots of vegetables. It's a sacrifice, but totally worth it not to have to buy more meds!

I also have slightly high cholestrol along with diabetes. So I really have to watch what I eat. Fresh vegies are great and also tuna in H2O , salmon, etc. I also take fish oil daily and an aspirin. Heart disease runs in my family. I do go walking on my good days as I also have chronic pain and fibro. The fish oil is graet so I would keep taking it!!!!

High triglycerides has more to do with excess sugar/simple carbs than it does fat. The liver turns all that extra sugar into triglycerides. Fish oil is the normal recommendation, along with cutting out simple sugars and carbs. Heres an article that might help. http://www.healthy-heart-guide.com/l...lycerides.html
