    Default Anyone try this?

No-poo hygiene? I read an article on MSN about people who forgo shampoo as a way of life. Anybody here do this? What made you decide to stop washing your hair and how does your hair look?

I have heard of this. If you have the discipline then I think its fine...I just can't seem to get past not washing my hair because my hair gets so greasy. I'm a hairstylist as well, and can't let my hair get nasty and go through that"awkward phase" before it gets better...I may try it the next time I start a vacation..and then hopefully have my scalp readjusted by the time I start work back up...but at this point it's not practical for me!

I've heard of people with really curly hair that don't use shampoo. I don't remember how or why it works. They still wash their hair, just use water and conditioner but don't bother stripping all the oils out with shampoo.

I have really straight hair, it looks bad if I don't shampoo, but the longer it is the less often I wash it. Otherwise the ends dry out.

I only wash my hair once or twice a week. Any more than that and it's a dry frizzy mess (I have curls/waves). I would imagine if people wanted to try it and wanted to avoid the in between stage where your scalp hasn't lowed it's oil production...you could try weaning your scalp off shampoo. If you shampoo every day, go to every other day for a few weeks. Then go to every three days for a few weeks, then ever four, & so on until you don't need it at all.

I have tried this and continue to do it.
You still wash your hair, just not with shampoo. You use conditioner instead. It took a about a week for my hair adjust, but my hair and scalp is so much happier.
I also rinse with cider vinegar every other week and also use a baking soda rinse every once in a while.
I have naturally curly/wavy hair. My is a lot more manageable when I follow this routine. I have more problems with my scalp and hair when I do use shampoo.

And for those who wonder, my hair does not smell, nor is it too greasy. I actually get more compliments when a use no shampoo than when I was.

If you have straight hair it may not be for you, but if you have curly/wavy hair it may be just the right thing for you.

Don't knock it, else you have tried it.

I haven't done this, but I HAVE cut my shampooing down to once a week or so. We didn't have a hot water heater for about a year and heated all our bath water on the stove. Washing my (long) hair took twice as much water as just bathing, so I started stretching the time between shampoos. These days, like I said, I wash daily, but shampoo about once a week or so.

I haven't noticed any particular effects one way or the other. I have thick, wavy, and brittle hair, inclined to snarl. Getting the snarls out causes almost always some tearing, and split ends. So I still have frizzy hair, and shampoo or not isn't going to change it!

But I do know that I would have had very oily hair after 1 day years ago, and I don't now, so I think I've been through the transition they talk about already.

    I do this.

Once you cut out shampoo, there is no more "stinky" or "oily" hair. You still wash it but not with shampoo.

I keep a bottle of baking soda and vinegar in the shower (watered down --15 oz water, 1 oz vinegar in a spraybottle). You wet your hair as usual and "shampoo" with the baking soda. Rinse with the vinegar. My hair is the healthiest it has been in my whole life.

You do have to go through a weaning process from the shampoo. Shampoo strips your scalp of oil leaving it damage. The scalp then OVERproduces oil to try and heal it leaving you with oilier hair which then becomes stinky. If you are in a habit of shampooing the hair daily, you need to start alternating shampoo days with baking soda days. After a few days you will notice a difference in the way your scalp reacts. That is when it is time to add in another baking soda day. Keep the process up until you are shampoo free. After a while you will not even need the baking soda every day.

My hair is much healthier. It doesn't get the yuckies like it did with shampoo. After having tried both, I strongly believe the shampoo is the yuckier choice of the two.

    yes i do it.

i do the curly girl routine. I have waist length curly wavy hair.

silicones are "out" if you do this method. use suave aloe and water lily conditioner diluted by half. use A LOT. get your hair wet. apply the conditioner to your scalp, scrub like you would shampoo. it takes a LOT. did i say it takes a LOT?

rinse well. your scalp and hair are clean, smell good and are non greasy.

once a week i use white rain energizing citrus shampoo because i get kind of a waxy buildup on my hair. the symptoms of overconditioning on me are frizz, fuzzball, crunchy, and supertangly.

my hair HATES proteins and silicones. i wash my head every day.

I haven't used shampoo in about 3 years and don't miss it a bit!

I started off going from shampoo to Octagon soap. Rather than stripping my hair, it felt clean and I didn't have to wash it every day. When I was using shampoo, by the end of the day my hair looked like a grease pile (even using products for oily hair).

I switched to baking soda and vinegar about a year ago and love it. My hair feels clean, not...perfumy/fruity/chemicaly like it did with shampoo. In fact, the smell of shampoo kind of puts me off now, lol.

There is a learning curve, and your hair *does* feel different than it does when you use shampoo. 'poo gives an artificial "slip" to hair, and it takes a while to get used to not having that anymore. Now, my hair has true body (with no styling products)......and not having to wash every day to avoid the oil-slick is the big bonus!
    Gratitude.

This is really interesting. My daughter and I have very curly hair. I will have to try this and see if I like the difference. Thanks to all that wrote how they do this.
