Surgery :(
I found out yesterday that I have to have a thyroglossal cyst excision. I have a small lump on my throat (about the size of a grape) that they thought was just an infected lymph node. I am SCARED TO DEATH, I have never had more than my blood drawn, I'm scared of the surgery and the scar and I guess all of it. Has anyone here had any experience with this?

I just had 2 cysts taken of my eyelids. They were on the bottom lid and I was "BUUGGGGIINN." I was afraid he would damage my eye, that the lid would look hideous,I am allergic to eggs which is in the anesthetic,I have a hyper clotting disorder, leaky heart valve,am overweight. I was telling the teens future things. BLAH,BLAH,BLAH.
Here's how it went. I went in there. They gave me a number so I couldn't feel the I.V. No pain/no problem. They snuck the verset (sp.) in the I.V. I don't know when I was out or going under,I don't remember the surgery,I healed really fast, The stitches were degradable so I didn't have to have them out,I can't even see any puckering, scarring anything, had no pain afterwords-just a little stinging. Take the tylenol they give you It's for swelling not pain. I had never had surgery before, it was a pleasant experience. Everyone knew what they were doing. I was relieved people don't comment or stare anymore. I don't worry it's cancer even though he told me it was just a cyst,it still played at my mind.
NOW THE HORRIBLE PART- $13,000 before insurance but there reveiwing it. I sit and wait. What will I owe. Probably, about $1500. Well worth.
I wish you luck and prayers, Try and relax. Surgery is nothing like it was even 10 years ago.
a lot of stress came off that day for me. Hopefully for you too.

I've had a couple of surgeries, one of which was similar to yours. There is nothing that I can say that will make you less nervous and worried, because until you go through a surgery, you don't know what to expect. Try not to get too stressed out. What you are having is relatively minor, and doctors these days do wonders with minimizing scars. I kind of like my scars. They make good conversation pieces.

Tina,
I know several people that have had your surgery and it was a breeze. They will make the incision along one of the lines on your throat. It will be red and fade with a little time and be totally unnoticeable.
Try not to worry! I will keep you in my thoughts and prayers.Mary

I've had surgeries, although not the one you're going to have and I know the nerves associated with it. Lots of hugs and thinking good thoughts for you, tina150!

My son had that surgery when he was around 18 months old, he is 30 now. Back in those days he had to stay overnight but I am sure now it is outpatient. It didn't seem to bother him at all and it never returned. Yes, they did it then in a crease in the neck and you would have never known that he ever had the surgery. Hugs to you and best of luck. I just have to say I would probably be nervous also but that is just me.

Surgery is scary because of the unknown. I know because I had 3 c sections; then I had to go on dialysis and had several more surgeries; by the time I had my kidney transplant they asked me if I wanted something to calm me down and I said no and meant it. You will go in and they will put an iv in. And by the time you get to the operating room you will be out. You will slowly wake up and they will give you pain medication if you need it. I was scared to death of having to have surgery and like I said by the time my transplant came it was relatively simple. To give you another point of view 10 weeks after my transplant I broke my foot; I said and meant it I would go through the transplant again in a minute compared to going through the broken foot again. Hope this helps.
