    Default Am I crazy?

Tomorrow a women's only clinic starts. I'm on the fence about it. I do karate 2 days a week. It's a great workout. But I'd like to have 4 days of exercise a week. I do some at home, but not enough to keep my heart rate up.

I'd like running because I can fun my naughty puppy Bella, (not the one in my avatar, Gizmo is lower energy, Bella is high maintenance). Plus it is something I can do through the summer when camping to maintain fitness level when there are no karate classes or other things.

I don't want to lose all i am gaining

I haven't had any issues running in karate, my shins were sore for a bit when I started, but now not bad. The clinic would work on techniques to prevent injury.

Am I crazy to take up running?

I don't think your crazy, maybe a masochist, but not crazy. If you are fit enough to do it and have the time I say more power to you.

Running is great! I used to do it when I was younger and lighter lol. Its definitely an exercise that you can do almost anywhere.

The only thing I would say is to make sure that you have a very good pair of shoes for shock absorption.

The womens clinic ended up canceled, so I registered in the learn to run clinic. 25 women 3 guys. No biggie there.

I did ok. Am I fit? Not a chance! LOL. But I'm working on getting there. Karate has helped boost the confidence a little. So, I'm getting out there!

I do have a good pair of shoes. We are going to cover various topics each week, including biomechanics and shoes, wardrobe. We run no matter the temperature and the goal is being able to run a 5Km after 10 weeks!

DD12 has agreed to be my running partner for practice at home. Which is good, she has been gaining weight, she is a goalie in ringette, but it's not all that active. She builds strong legs, but no real cardio involved. So, she is going to run with me too And the naughty puppy Bella needs the exercise too.

So I was supposed to do a practice run yesterday, but as life goes, there wasn't time. I did think of doing the treadmill, but I just ended up way too busy. So this morning I was getting ready to run on the treadmill, and said screw it. Grabbed the dog leash, put Bella, the schnoodle on and off we went. I did the 1-2 7 times as was told to do. It was raining out there. Know what? Once you get moving, you don't really notice. So I did my practice run. A day late, but done none the less. I feel darn good about it. I don't find the motion of running hard, but Bella makes me feel REALLY slow. She is barely walking fast. But I guess when you are 4-legged..lol. But she was so much better on the leash. She thinks she's a sled dog. TOday she barely did that and about 8 minutes into it, I'd just say her name and she'd adjust her gate to stay at my side.(This is a HUGE accomplishment for Bella, she usually exhausts herself and us by pulling)

Tomorrow there is a practice run at the clinic, but I am not sure, we have several things going on so I will likely just run Bella again.

mommy4ever - did you join a 'Running Room' clinic? If you do - great for you!!

Sounds like you did and great for you! My coworker did it - an all female one, she started with the beginners and at the end she joined for the next one up and just finished with that.

She used to ask me to meet her at the gym after she just ran 5K with the clinic so she can do another 5K on the treadmill beside me while I just walked briskly lol. Running doesn't agree with me at all....but I was told by my trainer friend that power walking has the same benefits as running/jogging. One day I'm going to get my friend to just crank the treadmill on me so I'm forced to run lol. I just can't willingly torture myself like that hahahaha.

LIbby, it is at the running room!

I tried to run in the past and was overwhelmed. You should take the Learn To Run clinic there. They start you gently. First week is 1 min. run 2 min walk. Next week 1 min run, 1 min walk. Then 2 min run, 1 walk, 3 min run, 1 walk, etc.

each week changing. They ask you practice twice a week.

They also have walking clinics, online for beginners, 1/2 marathon walk, and full marathon. I'll see how I feel after 10 weeks, and make an educated decision. Right now my legs are tired, but I did 2.5 hours of working out yesterday. Today is my day off, so it should be better for the clinic tomorrow. I may end up a walker but I am enjoying the running, we'll just see how this old body of mine holds out.

Oh come on, you're not that much older! But kudos to you for picking up running - especially going into the fall! My gf did it in early summer and was able to get 2 sessions in. She just finished and the cold weather set in so now she's going to go to the gym more often which means that will be the place for me to see her nowdays.

I may consider the clinic next year - when the budget allows and I feel up for it...need to prep mentally!

From all the runners I know, it is much easier to run in colder weather than in hot weather which is why i chose this fall.
