Default How do your lower cholesterol?

They had a wellness fair at dh's work. He got the results back and although his cholesterol levels are within the normal range, they are at the very highest part of normal. I think he eats the healthiest of all of us! What can we do to lower it? Thanks!

I take 500mg of non-flushing niacin. Also a great book on the subject is The new 8-week cholesterol cure by Robert E. Kowalski.

Here is the top ten foods to lower your cholesterol from the Mayo Clinic

Also there is one cholesterol number you would like higher than normal because they are associated with a reduced cardiac risk. your HDL

If it's high normal - it's still normal- his healthy eating is paying off!! (In other words, it's not a contest!)
The main changes you could make are to increase fiber and exercise.

Yeah oatmeal for sure. Also sometimes you can do all the right things and it can just run in the family.

I agree with Mary. Still normal.

When I met DH his was over 300. I did a combo of what has been mentioned -- oatmeal daily (I'd grind it into flour to make pancakes, add it to breads ..more interesting then a bowl for b'fast), I'd give him niacin daily, healthy oils and good fiber.

It is not really the high cholesterol that causes the problems. It is the inflammation. Watch junky foods. Limit or eliminate corn syrup and such.

Ask your Dr. about taking fish oil.......and check to see how much to take........along with the diet and excercise.

Agree with other poster.........Have a break down done so you know ALL the numbers, not just total chol. If the HDL is high - that is a good thing! Check the ratios.........

thanks everyone! Dh does have both numbers - the HDL and the LDL are both on the very high end of normal. He exercises a lot - he coaches strength and conditioning at the gymnastics studio 9 hours a week and works out at home most of the other days. He doesn't do a lot of cardio though, and when he got home from work he went for a run - something I know he hates, so he must really want to lower it too.

I will push the whole grains and fruit. Thanks for the tip on the fish oil, I take it every day but he doesn't. Will have to get him too. thanks for all the help!
