Marla, I am so sorry that you are having these health issues. Have you thought of addint to your exercise routine? Treading water in the pool, riding a bicycle, weight lifting for example... Water exercises provide the best workout with minimal effect on joints.
How is your water consumption? You might want to up it to help flush out your system while keeping it hydrated.
Please let us know how your doing.Travel light. The baggage of the past can only hold you back.

First a big (( hug )) for you.
I had a appt with a ENT specialist this past week. The other doctor wanted to do surgery on me. This doctor said no. Changing things around for my machine, and a different face mask was his ideas. Well the subject of weight came up. He said I need to lose some.
He made it sound simple.....eat less, move more, drink more water. Shoot for one pound a week. If we really think about it.....it's true we are our own worst enemies. We fool ourselves into thinking we are doing right. I am going to start a food diary log. He said count calories. No more than 1800 a day for me. If you eat 1000 for breakfast, than only 800 for the rest of the day. You make your own schedule.
Another suggestion was more small meals spaced out. Don't eat like it was Thanksgiving every day.
Look at your hands.......THERE IS YOUR POWER....to put or not put food in the mouth. As the doc said to me....*the ball is in your court now *
Think of the Wizard of Oz...the ending........the good witch said to Dorothy....your shoes.....you have had the power all along....now use them

Ive never known metformin to promote weightloss...if anything its made me gain my heavier weight.
As ladytoysdream said, its up to you to control what you put into your mouth and when. You DO have the power. At the same time are your food choices healthier options?
Use the food pyramid ad your guide. Eat whole grain pasta & breads - usually not the white bread/pasta on sale, more veggies then fruit and small portions of meat or protein at each meal. Low fat, less sauces/dressings and try to stick to things that are steamed or lightly pan fried vs deep fried and smothered with cheese - my downfall. Always eat a fibre & protein together - this avoids the "OMG I just ate an hour ago and I'm starving already!?" feeling. And try to limit your portions/servings - if you plan your food correctly you can eat 6 mini substantial meals/day vs 3 with snacks - who doesn't love eating?
If its in your budget, try to set up an appt with a dietitian and have them help you set out a meal plan. It may take a few tries but they can have you eating at your optimal caloric intake for weight loss w/o undereating or starving yourself. All you need to do is add 30 mins/day of exercise, must be brisk. Being active is great (housework, gardening - better then not moving right?) but I find being 'brisk' ie quick power walk around the neighbourhood works better.
Having said all that - we know what we need to do, its a matter of following through and actually doing it.

Hi Marla! I have been diabetic most of my adult life. I have been on and off meds more time than I can count. Really anytime I decide to be stubborn with my eating plan I end up on meds.
The only way I can keep off all meds and conquer the weight issues is a no processed foods lower carb program. I eat veggies protein and healthy fats to my hearts content but no grains besides flax.(I have a big gluten issue)
I was very very grateful when in 2000 I got a rather odd nutritionist(my third try) who in cooperation with the DR dug deeper and found out exactly what worked for me instead of the standard diabetes diet which had me getting fatter and fatter and on more meds (I started as a very skinny diabetic). I seriously challenge anyone to say a low carb diet is low veggies. I eat tons of low glycemic veggies. AS long as I faithfully stay on plan I am 100% med free including pills and the insulin I needed at one time. I also faithfully exercise 5 x a week.
MY A1c is always around 5. Blood pressure 90/60,Fasting blood sugar 100% normal, cholesterol couldn't be any better. However give me a month off my lower carb plan and they are horrendous!!!!
I realize my story is conflicting advice to some other on this thread as far as diet but I do want to throw it out there because all our bodies and metabolisms do work differently.
Sorry if this is a book! Off to go eat my pumpkin flax, cream for breakfast~July 19 saving goal for event $104/$1000

for me, metformin taking, large woman, my body changed dramaticallly when i started attending a "body sculpting" class at a local gym. i can see the muscle lines in my quads, i have lats (!) and my "neck and shoulder fat" is almost gone. my weight is the same. i did not change my diet.
on cable "body by gilad" is a body sculpting class if you can't afford a gym. fit network. http://fittv.discovery.com/fansites/gilad/gilad.html
also vitamins a&D, C, iron, fish oil, and b-complex make a huge improvement in my energy levels.11% gross to retirement
10% takehome to tithe and offerings
emergency fund maintained at 3000(works for me)
credit card debt 7500
mortgage free
freedom accounts/sinking funds that ebb and flow
then live on the rest!
i am trying something new. LDS church advises savings or debt repayment should be the same as the tithe. 10% each.
