Hair dyeing/highlighting question....
Hi all!! Ok so I have ALWAYS colored my own hair be it dark or blond highlights. I highlighted a few months ago after i got my hair cut and was well somewhat happy with it. Its time to recolor/highlight. I did a dark brown to cover my highlights (pretty close to my natural color) Nice n Easy "kit" now I want to do blond highlights again. Heres my question...Highlighting kit- L'oreal DIY says safe for color treated hair, how long do I need to wait to highlight?? Box just says wait 2 weeks between perming and highlighting and to highlight hair that has not been shampooed in 2 days! TIA for any help!!

They usually have an 800 number you can call - honestly, I think I'd call rather than risk some odd result on my head! I know, it'll grow out, but still......

Here's the issue....I'm a professional....Your bleach will have to cut through the color that is on your hair before you can bleach it up...active time without a heat source is impaired....are you using a cap and pulling it through with a crochet hook? Tell me your plan and i'll do what i can to help you through the project. Honestly this is one time I might have a professional do it...Lot's of stuff can happen... I do about 70% haircolor and I have in excess of 300 clients...some highlighting is simple to do...others like this one can have less than satisfactory results if not done correctly.

Ok Good I was hoping you weren't just painting it on...that's the technique that always screws up.... use the cap and pull through small sections of hair (notice I say small?) larger amounts cause the hair to bunch together and good penetration of the bleach is compromised. once you've done that use a comb to comb through the pulled out sections....make sure you don't hit the cap holes with your comb because that will force the hole bigger. Apply bleach (make sure that the bleach is not to liquid or you stand the chance of having it bleed through the hole and create a spot on your head) and use a plastic cap to cover the head...without a standing dryer at your disposal..probably the best thing you can do to accelerate the action is to wrap a hot towel out of the dryer around your head.....check the bleach action frequently and everytime you do that reheat the towel (you need the warmth for it to be able to cut through the color and rise to the lighter color). If by chance the action stops and the bleach doesn't lift enough you'll need to reapply before you take the cap off. Hope this helps...

But understand that it is hard on the hair because the bleach has to stay on the hair longer to cut through the color...k? so don't skimp on a good conditioner!

I am also a hairdresser and one little tip...don't freak and take it off if it looks red or brassy...it has to get past that stage to get to the blonde....good luck

As long as there are professionals here, I have a hair color question, too.
My hair is a light ash brown with about 30% gray.
I want to cover the gray and maintain my natural color.
Everything I use turns it brassy.
L'Oreal light ash brown was terrible.
I switched to a slightly darker shade by Nice & Easy. It looks better, but still has a reddish tint.
Any advice?Jean

If you just want to cover the gray and keep your natural color, you don't need to use permanent color which is higher in perioxide, so it's made to lift your natural color, and deposit. That is probably why you see the brassiness.
Just use a semi-permanent hair color. It only has about 5% peroxide so it won't lift and just deposit and cover the gray. Of course make sure it's the shade closest to your natural hair color.
Easier on the hair too. I loved using Redkin shades in the hair salon just for this purpose.

Well Palooka....you're a stylist!!! And yeah exactly what you said....I use Redken Shades also...lol I use the technique of putting the color on first because I don't like to foil with bleach touching the scalp...sometimes this leaves a bit of grey if the first color isn't applied all over...I've done it both ways and yes it is faster...but for me it's not as perfect.... but cool that you that you said exactly what I would have said!!! Where you located???

I made so much money using Redkin shades.
In the salon we also did this handy tip of putting just a cap full of Redkin color straight into the neutralizer when giving a perm. Yep! Only charged 5 bucks for it, but it put back in the color. This was many moons ago.
It took me awhile to get use to foiling because in the 80's everything was the cap. lol I keep it off the scalp and I rather highlight with Sunglitz anyday before bleach. I love that stuff.
I love the results using this foiling method in one quick step.
I'm in Missouri. I worked in the salon for many years.
