I agree with what Darlene said about moderation. (Ooooh, if I had only practiced that all my life, how thin I would be!) Even beer! ---I had one last night! Amber Bock. What's your fave, Russ?
BUT---I try to eat way more of the whole foods/healthy stuff and way less of the processed junk.______

I generally agree with recommendations for moderation, BUT....there are some things that I don't think even moderate consumption is good for us, and those items include HFCS, sugar, and aspertame. Particularly aspartame. Despite the FDA's claim that it's safe, problems associated with aspartame's consumption include neurologic, psychologic, eye, endocrine, and metabolic problems. It's long been recognized that diet soda does not help you lose weight; rather, it makes you crave carbohydrates. And if you give into those cravings, it's just going to perpetuate your weight problem...creating a perpetual market for the companies who manufacture diet sodas! But what people may not realize is that aspartame is in a whole lot more than just diet soda - it's in about 6,000 food and drink products, and not just diet ones!
I really do believe a whole lot of illness and disease is food-related. Garbage in, garbage out.

I also find that it's hard to give up so much at once. The two main strategies I employ are:
1. Small changes The only ingedients I actively avoid are HFCS and Trans-fats. Sure, there's a lot more things out there that are bad for me, but it's easier to concentrate on those 2.
2. I concentrate on adding healthy things rather than avoiding bad things. Say "I will eat salad for lunch twice this week" or "I will have a piece of fruit for snack" rather than "I won't have any cookies this week" or whatever.
I will say, having watched Super Size Me, I can't eat at McDonald's anymore. I try and avoid Burger King and other fast food places too. I'm not sure that the local wings place and and diner are much healthier, but it makes me feel better.Loving wife to DH (8/31/03) and Mommy to Owen Alexander (9/20/06) and Oliver Andrew (5/25/12)
