Default Article: Why You Should Stop Eating Sugar Now

This article surprised me with things that aren't focused upon or associated with when trying to reduce sugar intake. Media sometimes focuses only on a few of these, not all. We all know we should cut back but wow.

For example, over consumption of sugars puts one in an increased risk of cancers and Alzheimer's.

    I guess I'm gonna die.

At one time, coffee caused cancer. I guess my point is: If you do enough studies, by enough people, eventually everything can lead to a higher risk of cancer or ___________.

In reality these articles make sense and then I look to dear father-in-law who is 91 years old and eats tuns of sweets because he likes them. He does not have diabetes nor dementia, cancer or some of the other things mentioned. Is he a rarity?

Makes me wonder. At any rate if I do not start following some of these ideas, I see myself as a candidate for some of these ailments.

    Thanks for the article.

I feel better physically if I stay away from sugar and starchy foods. I think it's interesting too that cutting sugar out is supposed to be extremely helpful for people who have rheumatoid arthritis.

Sugar doesn't cause cancer, lol. It only helps the cancer cell to become aggrevated because of fermentation and all of that good stuff.

Libby and I had a pretty good discussion about it on Facebook. It's enlightening. It makes you realize you shouldn't have slept through biology class all those years ago.

Ha! Never even thought of that! I'm not a big candy/chocolate eater so it never occurred to me.

I think it is one of those things best done in baby steps and not with an all or nothing attitude if you want to be successful. I cut out all sugary drinks first. However, I do allow myself a coke once a month or so. We cut out all high fructose corn syrup. That one was pretty easy as there are alternative products usually that are still good and about the same price, but you have to read everything- it is hidden in so many foods. We replaced sugar, for the most part, in baking with agave nectar. You can buy a double pack of it at Costco. It looks kind of like honey. It tastes sweeter than sugar I guess so you use less and has a better glycemic index. When making cookies I use a little of that and some raisins and that makes it sweet enough. We make a carrot cake with raisins and pineapple and very little agave- it is delicious and has a lot of natural sweetness in it. We are still working on the starchy foods. We've replaced as much white as we can with wheat. My kids really do not LOVE it, but we do our best- wheat pasta is easy as you put tomato sauce on it and who would know? Brown rice they don't like as much as white, but they'll eat it. The softer whole grain breads they'll eat- so not as much fiber as some, but better than many others. Also just cutting down on the starchy foods- in the US we eat so many carbs. I think working on increasing fruits and vegis helps in decreasing carbs- give something and take something away. It is just a different way of thinking and little by little you can ease it into your lifestyle. But again, I don't think you can do an all or nothing. Have some chocolate on Halloween and then put it away.
