    Default Twinkie Diet

Twinkie diet helps nutrition professor lose 27 pounds - CNN.com

For 10 weeks, Mark Haub, a professor of human nutrition at Kansas State University, ate one of these sugary cakelets every three hours, instead of meals. To add variety in his steady stream of Hostess and Little Debbie snacks, Haub munched on Doritos chips, sugary cereals and Oreos, too.

His premise: That in weight loss, pure calorie counting is what matters most -- not the nutritional value of the food.
A calorie is a calorie. I bet he felt crappy though.

Heard this on TV tonight...........but he had some Doritos too..........saw that he was just maintaining that calories are the thing to count...........his total was below 2000.

I would lose weight eating Twinkies too............would have trouble gagging the first one down!! They are worse than some of our store bakery cookies!

I find it interesting. The thing is, is that so many people want to argue that a calorie doesn't equal a calorie and depends where the calorie comes from...Protein, carb, and fat.

For example, low carb/high protein such as Atkins and Protein Power, I get why it works. It keeps your blood sugar stable and helps from craving junk food, even Ketosis. But if you look at the over all menu of what most of low carber's consume, it's around 1300 to 1500 calories, if not way less.

It's why Weight Watchers works for millions. You can eat whatever you want, but keep within burning more than you take in and you will lose weight.

It's nothing new, no, it's basic Physics. I guess it just bugs me how many diet books gets sold for basically saying the same thing, just with fancier words.

Some people couldn't believe that I lost 30 pounds eating potatoes many ways and popcorn. Mostly a high carb diet.

Disclaimer: I'm not talking about a diet you need to be on for your health. That's a different subject.

Would your recipe happen to be the same as mine? Lots of dripping butter? Can you grease and lube your car after eating your popcorn too?
I don't like twinkies either but I might do the cupcake diet if it ever comes out. Seriously though I do agree with Palooka, a calorie is a calorie. I believe it's not what you eat, but how much you eat of it. Your body needs many types of foods to get all the nutrients it requires.

Not only was he a professor but a human nutrition professor

Liked this final quote in the article:

"I wish I could say the outcomes are unhealthy. I wish I could say it's healthy. I'm not confident enough in doing that. That frustrates a lot of people. One side says it's irresponsible. It is unhealthy, but the data doesn't say that."

It appears that he become more healthy not just weight loss.

If you want to see his stats check out his face book page liked in the article.

I found it interesting that his cholesterol went up when he started meat again.

Sorry but the guy sounds like a poor nutritionist. You can get away w/ crappy eating for awhile but long term it will catches up w/ you. He's lucky he didn't go diabetic. His cholesterol went up because he was eating actual food again not chemicals. His body was digesting his fat and muscle so he lost weight. A bit of a twit I'd say.

He seems conflicted with the results.

He also said he didn't want to set a bad example for his children so he ate his veggies at home and unwrapped his meals away from the table.

He was eating a little under 1800 calories so I don't think that is low enough to lose his muscle. I wouldn't go as far to call him a twit either. He was proving a point that it's calories that matter when it comes to weight loss, not nutrition from them.

The experiment had nothing to do with nutrition.
