My Dr Suggested ALLI?
I was discussing with my Dr. my desire to lose 15lbs and he suggested Alli? I read the side effects and they scare me.... does anyone else take this? He also said there is a natural version I can get at the healthfood store?
Having thyroid issues makes losing weight very difficult..... suggestions welcome! The Frugal Cavegirl Kim

If you're already eating right (not overdoing the fats) then Alli won't do a thing for you. That was my experience anyway. It's a fat blocker and if you're not eating too much fat, there's not much for it to block.
It's cheaper if your doc will prescribe the prescription version, if you have insurance that will pay for it. But that won't do anything for you either if you're not eating too much fat.~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Make sure to track your thyroid numbers yourself.
My wife had hers checked once and they said "it's normal". When she said ok, what was the number? They looked and to THEIR surprise, it was high! Oops.Russ

My Calories usually range 900-1400 depending on the time of month - if ya know what I mean... I'm pretty active but my weight won't budge even with meds! The just swapped me to armor and they adding some interesting supplements... I am going to try to stay 75% vegetarian and see if it helps..... they have no answers for me I even saw a Dietician and she could not believe what I was eating and my weight would not budge not even with exercise!

We call alli "Poopy pants".
All it does is "punish" you if you are naughty and cheat on your diet. If you are weak willed and sneak all the no no's then lie to your dr about your diet, maybe Mr poopy pants is for you. (sarcasm for the people who think all overweight people eat like pigs)
If it is your thyroid and you are eating "clean/healthy", it won't do a thing for you.

All I know that I can say about Alli is what the pharmacist (the one i call for all suggestions of OTC meds. That works at the drug store my mom works at)told me. He said he would never ever ever ever suggest anyone ever take it. He said the best way to lose weight is eat smart and excercise.
With that said, everytime i see the commericial with the pharmacist saying that she recommends it, just makes me laugh.Chele

Have you considered weight watchers? I have been doing it for awhile now and am losing weight - finally.

My DD Dessi is hypo since she was 5 years old, she has taken Synthroid since except when she became pregnant with Kain the thyroid problem disappeared.
I think that the weight problem has to do with the hypo, hopefully once they find the right meds and dosage the weight will come off.

Getting your thyroid levels under control is the 1st step. Then I would suggest you keep a food and exercise diary. I use Free Calorie Counter, Diet & Exercise Journal | MyFitnessPal.com. I found it very helpful. I started out weighing and measuring everything! It taught me what proper portions are and made me aware of everything I put in my mouth. Recording everything and seeing the calories, carbs, fat, sodium, cholesterol, etc. is a REAL eye opener.

Exactly this! I have my thyroid levels checked regularly, and if they are under control, then what I call 'storing fat for winter like a bear side effect' should be a non-issue.
My Fitness Pal is very eye-opening (I'm back to tracking that btw, savvy.) I realized I was drinking over 700 calories a day in pop!McD

I use the myfatsecret calorie counter. They really are an eye opener. Measure portions. You wouldn't believe the portion distortion you could have. I was amazed when i realized what a cup of cereal really looked like.
It is what it is.
