Mek, how is the running going? Did you change your diet? I assume that the goal is to be in better health. If you don't change eating habits you will be struggling a lot.

I have changed my diet and exercise. Although I am not following the couch to 5K regimen, I have heard good things about it.
I run on and off during a 1 hour treadmill session.
Weight loss is 80% diet and 20% exercise.

I've been running for awhile (2 years give or take some) and I run in cheap worn out shoes or barefoot and haven't suffered all the common runners injuries. I'm carring quite a bit of extra weight as well and have still been able to avoid the injuries and build up the distance and lengths of my runs with intervals as others suggested. I also do the short strides and don't land on my heel. The bottom of my feet aren't tough enough yet to handle all my running barefoot or I'd switch to it in a heartbeat as it feels better on my body. I will frequently do the first part of my run in shoes and then when my leg muscles are aching I'll take them off and feel almost like I haven't run yet. Improvments for me take quite a bit longer than they do for others as a direct result of my smoking but they arrive as long as I keep up a routine and don't get too bogged down in speed.

Make sure you have really good running shoes. You might want to try walking really fast and build up to running. When I am heavier it is to difficult for me to run. When I am lighter running/jogging is easier.

Personally, I love my Brooks. I have been using Brooks for years (as in over a decade) and have never had an injury. I'm not a marathoner - my max avg is about six miles - but I also run faster than my marathon-running friends.
