I told him I was going vegan and he decided to jump on board to get healthier. I'm down 6 lbs. This is day 10. We're not exactly on the same "diet". I don't have Any dairy, no white flour, no refined sugar, no animal products whatsoever.

I basically eat plant-based everything. Fruits, vegetables, nuts/seeds, whole grains and legumes.

Good start! BUT remember - You should be making a lifestyle change; not doing a crash diet. Eat sensibly and exercise and the weight will come off. Plus you are more likely to keep it off if you lose it slowly.

    Good Luck!

It's definitely not a crash diet. We're basically following a combo of Eat to Live (Dr. Fuhrman) and Dr McDougall while we add more vegan meals to our repertoire.

It is a lifestyle change. once my weighy is at normal level I plan on keeping the activity and eating habits up.

So far so good. I think the culprit is a combination of too much sugar and not enough activity.

here is a big eye opener on sugars.

Congrats!! Woohoo, another McDougllar! I like Dr. Furhman too. Have you read all their great books and the sites? Lots of good info and recipes. It's so simple, easy, and healthy to eat like this.

Have you seen "The Last Heart Attack" special they have been running on CNN? All about a Vegan diet.

Gabe, has it been hard to give up meat? Congrats again!

I've been to their sites, but haven't read All their books, yet. Just getting started, but am pleased with how I feel now at day 10. The first couple of days were rough. I think most of it was the quitting coffee part. I didn't get the shakes, but there was a moment where I could picture myself at a Dunkin Donuts with a weapon and demanding all of their coffee and not their money or donuts. LOL I was very, very moody. I felt this total desperation that I can't even put into words.

No food cravings for me and at this point, I'm completely satisfied with what I'm eating. After eating like this for over a week, I feel a huge change in what I'm no longer willing to put into my body.

I'll definitely look into that show. I haven't seen it.

All I can say is that I can't believe I didn't do this years ago. It's like this awakening.

Right now, we're pretty strict with things. So vegan meals that contain unnecessary sugar, salt, white flour or fat aren't appealing. We're going for the most simple of options. I'm finding that I want my food unadulterated. I'm sure in time this will change a bit and we'll continue to add new meals to our meal plan.

I definitely need to shed some weight, but mostly I was looking for a more nutrient dense way of eating. This is a natural progression, after years of frugality, that supports my views on personal finance, ethics, health, and the environment.

I wanted to do this a while ago, but didn't think it would go over well with Gabe and back then, I felt discouraged and a bit angry with the thought that I would have to prep and cook separate meals. But as my 42nd birthday approached, I decided there were a lot of things that I was no longer willing to sacrifice.

I can't speak for Gabe on the meat thing, but I haven't had any problem at all because I've never been a big fan of it. I've always been squeamish preparing and cooking any and all animal based foods. I have dairy issues and never ate fish or seafood, too.

Thanks for your post. It's nice to meet a kindred-spirit.

    I don't miss meat. I have a new fondness for V8.
Basically I have been treating my body like a trashcan with the leftovers that the kids didn't eat for the last 10 years. Eating large portion and emptying their plate in mine. So this is a refreshing change.

When I reach 180-190LBS I will kick it up a notch on the exercise and probably will start running a daily 5K in the morning.
