I'd say lay into the carbs! But eat healthy ones none-the-less...whole grain pasta, etc.

LOL, this reminds me of a story DH tells. He was growing up in the 1950's and a friend of his needed to gain weight to join the army. They fed him bananas and milk shakes and then CARRIED the kid down to the recruiting station! He just made it.

~I second milk shakes. I craved those so bad with my first pregnancy and had a huge one every day. I gained two pounds a week with that pregnancy just with that change. I was so relieved when I craved fruit with my second.
You could also suggest the person try to build some muscle. So lots of carbs and proteins(google a swimmer's diet)combined with weight lifting(even just cans or milk jugs!). Lay off any cardio(dancing, biking, running)while trying to gain.~

Full fat dairy, whole milk, butter, and cheese in combination with carbohydrates like bread, muffins, beans, rice, pasta and potatoes. Take a little time to compare labels, though. For example, a bagel has more calories and carbs than an english muffin, and that is even before the butter and cream cheese.

Choose fatty meats like pork and beef over leaner items like chicken and seafood. Put gravy on everything. Avoid eating too much sugar (candy) and junk food which will just make you sick.

Your friend needs to eat about 4000 calories a day to gain that much weight that quickly.

Rice pudding would be a good food to try. I can't imagine what 4,000 calories look like either but I am sure if I had to I would be able to figure it out. lol

Depends on the metabolism of the person who needs to gain it, too. I agree that upping carbs will probably do it. My dad had a very high metabolism. To join the military, he ate huge steak dinners, mashed potatoes etc. Then drank tons of water. If what your friend needs is for a weigh in, the quickie method might work. Eating a couple pounds of food plus drink a lot of water might do it. If it needs to be for something more long term, then diet modification would work better. My dad's metabolism was high enough that even after getting in, he was required to go to the base doctor and get a special shake two or three times a day besides three huge meals to up his weight to military specs.

Your average restaurant dinner entree is 1100-1300 calories. Things like the loaded specialty burger, a loaded 12" pizza, a pasta entree with chicken and cream sauce. Get the loaded nachos or a platter of cheese fries with dipping sauce and you're looking at 2000+ calories. A restaurant breakfast omelette or order of plain french toast comes in around 900 (maybe more). And I won't mention the sodium levels.

Any of that I could eat off of for 2-4 days.

Thanks Contrary Housewife. We have a friend who has a high metabolism. He drinks special shakes during the day too. Whenever he comes over I make sure there's lots of meat and potatoes!
