I bit my nails as a kid until my mom told me about the little bugs under our nails that are too small to see!
That did it! My nails have always grown pretty long and strong since then.

I bit them all the time when I was younger. I would bite them so short, my fingers would bleed. Then I saw the movie "The Fly". I watched the part where he was sitting in the bathroom and puts his fingertip in his mouth. He pulls away and his fingernail peels off. He then squeezes his finger and pus comes out so he starts pulling off all of his fingernails and squeezing the pus out of his fingers. To this DAY, when I put my fingernails anywhere near my mouth, I immediately pull them away.

I was a terrible biter until I was about 12. I just quit, but then spent the next 20 years picking at my nails and cuticles instead.
Then a couple of years ago my original wedding set fell apart and we replaced it (frugally, with a vintage 1930's set found on eBay :-D) and as I was always looking at my hand and showing it off to friends I decided to paint my nails for the 1st time in years...well, that started a new obsession (see me holding the nail polish bottle in my avatar?) and now I'm fixated on having them nicely manicured and don't pick or bite because it would wreck my mani. =D
Not sure how to post pics, but here's what they look like now, if this link works:
