Yesterday, Mel was getting up hay and wanted dd to help by driving the truck the few feet between the hay piles (in the pasture). However, he was not quite ready and she hopped up the back of the truck to wait. She didn't see the other pitchfork and Mel didn't see her jumping in the truck. The pitchfork was laying in the hay on the truck, got stuck in her jeans and then fell down and stuck her between the third and fourth toe. I mean it literally landed between the toes. Could have been so much worse - could have speared those toes. Thank God that it didn't. However she now has a cut between the toes (right in the webbing as I call it) and it hurts like crazy. We put everything on it, peroxide, bactine, neosporin and a baking soda bath but it still hurts terribly (she says). Her tetanus shot is still in effect and she is on antibiotics for a sinus infection. What else should I be doing? BTW - I did not see the sandals on her feet before the accident or I wouldn't have let her outside with them on. She knows not to wear them around work but thought she was just going to be pressing gas and brake pedals. :bang:
Ouch! That must have been scary for her! I'm so sorry to hear that she is hurting... Have you seen in pharmacies, they sell this spray that numbs the pain when you get a open wound? I don't remember what it's called but maybe your pharmicist can tell you...I know the name ends with *caine*.....
I checked it again as soon as I got home and it is does not look any worse than yesterday. I made her soak it in a weak tea tree oil and oil of oregano solution in warm water. Thanks for all your kind thoughts (needless to say, I have more gray hairs after this incident).
You are doing exactly right Pat. If it shows any sign of infection, take her to the dr, because even though she is on an antibiotic, the germ that might be attacking her foot might also be resistent to that antibiotic.
first sign of that is increasing tenderness, heat, redness and swelling in the area. As long as she isn't showing signs of those you don't have to worry.
And having the tetanus up to date helps too. So I can't think of anything else.
She's walking on it much better this morning and it not complaining as much. It is still slightly pink on top of the foot but less than yesterday. I think we're mending but I will make her soak it again this evening.
(I was extra careful using that mean old pitchfork myself last night).
I am glad to hear that Ryan is on the mend. :hug2:
