Default Anyone have any home remedies for pneumonia?

I had pneumonia in November of 01... and it feels like it's trying to set in again. I know that walking is the only way to clear your lungs, but does anyone have any other advise as I would really like to avoid hospitol and I don't have a family doctor at this time.

I've tried hot tottie's 2 nights running and have turned to conventional med's as of today...I asked the pharmacist for a bit of advice and am taking Tussin DM (generic) and A generic Claritin D 24 hr.

Any nurses...I won't hold you responsible for any advice.

Dd has gotten pneumonia several times (and she's only 8!!!) and I have to agree about the Tussin DM. If it's viral antibiotics won't help anyway, but they will if it is a bacterial infection. Drink lots of water! I pray you are well soon, Graci!

No real advice, but sometimes the change in weather makes me feel like I'm getting pneumonia again. My Dr. also told me that my lungs could be scarred from the pneumonia I got in 2003..
    Get Well soon.

I don't have pneumonia but have bronchitis that I cant seem to get rid off.

My doctor suggested eating lots of hot chicken soup and putting garlic powder or garlic salt on it, actually he said put lots of it in my soup to help break up the congestion.

He also ordered me to get a vaporizer for my home. He said the $10.00 Vicks one at Walmart is all I needed so I got that on Thursday last week. I can really tell a differnce on the days I eat soup and run the vaporizer.

Hope you feel better soon. But if you don't, call around and see what doctors take cash patients and how much they charge. We have several here in this small town and the cheapest I found was $50.00. If they did a breathing treatment, they billed me for that part.

I'd like to say the Mucinex is amazing stuff. Vicks VapoRubis good for coughing. If you can sleep laying down it's important not to stay on one side for too long as laying on your side impedes air flow to the dependent (down) side.

Musinex worked great when i had my sinus infection, it really cleared out the phlemmy congestion that accompanied it.

When my ds was little he had pneumonia often. We learned a few tricks from his stays in the hospital that helped us.

    1. a cool mist humidifier
    2. Vick's vapor rub at nite
    3. Patterning (which is smacking you on the back, around the shoulder area with a cupped hand for about 10 minutes) 2-3 times daily (beware this makes you cough b/c it breaks it up....it's not fun but it works!)
    4. LOTS of fluids, pushed
    5. O.J. and chicken soup
    6. NO allergy meds....they tend to make it last longer
    7. Tussin DM was our drug of choice

I hope you get some relief Graci, don't let it go too long before you go to the dr.

I have had pneumonia a number of times and also have some scars on my lungs....

There are lots of great idea here and I would also like to add:

    REST!

Take it easy for awhile. Make sure you are getting the rest you need and a FULL nights sleep.

Also, please do go to the Dr if you feel you are getting worse, pneumonia can be serious.

Thanks Ladies! Don't worry, if it gets too bad, I'll see a doc. DH has been "patterning" my back for me--never knew what it was called...learn someth'n every day!

I'm getting plenty of rest but making sure I get up and walk around at least 10 minutes each hour. Sleeping has been difficult, infact, I've slept downstairs since Thursday night so I wouldn't disturb dh...I miss him...sniffle

I'll try the garlic salt...can't hurt...As for the oregano oil...I don't know where I could find any locally but I'm very interested in trying it! I've been taking a multi-vitamin and pushing fluid, too.

Thanks for all the advice...I'll keep you posted!

Along the garlic salt lines... Garlic is a really strong immune supporter. The recommendation is to eat one clove a day. If you can put minced garlic in your food, that would help.
