    Wink Getting Kids to Exercise

    Okay,

I dare not complain about anyone here anymore - so I'll do my best.

However, the child I help take care of is... well, lazy.
And I say this because most of today's kids simply are.

If it's not a battery operated / electronic "gizmo" - they're not interested - period.

Besides walking the dog, this child barely moves - quite literally - which saddens me. We don't have a backyard and he doesnt really have any friends nearby.

    He's also terrified of sports!

I'm not a gung-ho "let's work out 5 times a day" kinda woman - but I do get no less than 30 minutes of my exercise a day, as does his father.

Yeah, I know, we're adults - we're more health conscious.

BUT... how do YOU get your kids to exercise?

How about doing something with him. Bike riding comes to mind. Bring along a nice picnic lunch. Make it fun, not a chore.

How about just taking longer walks with the dog, at least 30 minutes, around the neighborhood? Or geting a dog toy (ball or frisbee or something) and going to the park to play with the dog, or just each other to toss the ball or play.

Gardening? It is not the most active thing but something. I log quite a few steps on my pedometer pushing the lawnmower back and forth (especially since we have a push, not powered mower).

Maybe find a sport that the child will like. there's so many choices...there's got to be something they're interested in. Karate, baseball -- my ds is starting track this week. I like the idea of family walks when the weather is decent.

Pump up the music and dance! Check freecycle for bikes. Get out and find trails. http://www.railtrails.org/ check that it's a great website. You can bike trails, walk them, whatever. What about a small indoor trampoline. Would the child know it's for excersize or just get excited that he is allowed to jump in the house
