The Paramedics were just here....
I had to call 911 for Jesse. He left for 6 hours of testing in town and called me about 10 min. later saying he was burning up inside and his face was swelling!
He wouldn't pull over so he drove home and I stayed on the phone with him. This started about 8:10 this morning.
The paramedics said he had an "adverse" reaction to the Niacin tablet that he had taken. (He usually takes one a day 100 mg. on days when he has stayed up too late the night before.) He didn't have any difficulty breathing and he didn't have other signs of an "allergic" reaction. His bp was 126/76 which is good for age of 18 (almost 19). His heart rate was 99 which is a little fast. His skin color was beet red! It is starting to go back to normal color now. I gave him 2 tsps. of benedryl and will watch him to see if there are any changes. The paramedics said if they took him by ambulance they would just watch him too and it would mean taking him into Vegas so he declined transport. They said at this point they couldn't do anything for him anyway.
So I'm on pins and needles watching over him and he has the blanket pulled over his head so it's a difficult job. Who would think a dietary supplement would be so dangerous!
Please keep good thoughts for Jesse today."Success on any major scale requires you to accept responsibity."

I have heard that "flushing" is one of the side effects of Niacin -- just wondered if this could have been his sensation of burning up inside. I hope all is well.

I take a Niacin supplement daily. If you read the bottle, there should be a warning and a recommendation to take this at bedtime. It does cause flushing of the chest, neck and face. I get this all the time, I am usually asleep and don't notice it, but sometimes I will take my niacin, then come in here and get on the computer, if I stay on too long, I am still awake when the heat wave hits. I turn red as a beet and HOT! My doctor says that is one of the side effects of Niacin supplements. I take it on my Dr.'s recommendation. It helps lower your cholestorol.
