I am not diabetic but both my dad, my eldest brother and two of my best friends are - all type 2.

Three of them are insulin dependent and the other is just diet at the moment.

We had to learn a lot about it when my dad was first ill (he spent about a month in hospital while they got his blood under control), injecting oranges and all that! Yuk.

For the most part it has had a positive impact on all concerned, in a weird way. Now everyone, both those with diabetes and us who are around them, are much more healthy. We are much more mindful about what we put into our bodies, our routine and the amount of exercise we do.

Like anything else it was pretty difficult at first to accommodate the necessary changes but it quickly becomes habit. At times it just takes a little more organisation. The diabetc nurse is an invaluable source of support and information, there is also lots of literature available.

www.diabeticgourmet.com is a good site with lots of recipes, but there are many online resources too.

btw, my dad's favourite aspect is getting his nails done, mainicure and pedicure - he sees it as one good side effect!
