I am fed up! long vent....
I went 2 weeks ago today for blood work for my thyroid(I have to go every 3 months). My appt. to see the DR was last Tuesday, which they cancelled because he had a meeting. I wasnt home when they called (Monday) so I didnt get to reschedule my appt. I have called THREE times and left messages and today I just said the h*ll with it. I called another DR,a specialist (who I should've been seeing to begin with) and will see him sometime next week...if he approves me (he has to "approve" all new patients) I am a little nervous about meeting a new Dr. but I am little excited to go and get some EXPERT help.
When I called today, the lady told me to bring my medical records and any scans or ultrasounds I had of my thyroid. uuummmm I NEVER had any!!! I have been diagnosed with hypothyroidism for almost 2 years and never had a scan or u/s...she was shocked!
She also asked if I had any nodules..???? HECK IF I KNOW!!!
She said " I dont like talking about Dr's and saying they dont know what they are doing, but these test SHOULD have been done!" I also told her my medication (the dosage) had been changed every time I went to see him, which was every 3 months!Oh my word. I'm sure they'll poke the crap out of me next week!
Thanks for letting me vent!

What meds are you taking tammy? I'm on Synthroid .150 mg, I'm hoping after my next visit I can go back to .137, I felt much better on it. At one point I was on .175 and was miserable.
I have been lucky with my drs. my endocrinologist is great, I love him! And he's cute..lol.

Tammy, what a stroke of luck for that doctors office not to call you back! Sounds like you will be seeing a "real" doctor this time and I bet since you've not had what he would consider "good" care, he will probably take you as a patient.
I hope everything goes well for you at the new docs. Hugs.

I am on Thyroxine for Hypothyroidism, we have the condition diagnosed by Blood work, the meds are adjusted if the body reacts by working too fast on the dose you are prescribed.
You only get nodules with Hyper thyroidism ( that is OVER active thyroid). Therefore you don't need routine x rays/Ultrasound in hypothyroidism.
Blood work is the only regular test you really need unless your symptoms show anything to the contrary.
I am an RN with a Doctor in the family, so have "on Tap" advice
I am not worried about having it, if I went to my GP they would take my Bloods for checking every 12 months.
I was diagnosed about 12 years ago, I don't even think about it except to remember to take my pills every morning.
BTW I DO know that if you take your Medication at night you are much more likely to have nightmares and bad dreams!
Best to take it in the morning!
Thyroid Medication isn't like a pain killer - it is a hormone so it takes in the order of 3 months for the body to show any response to treatment or changes in drug dose. This can be disappointing for overweight people as they often expect to loose weight straight away.
HTH?

Karen, thanks for all that info. That helps a lot. Hopefully I'll he'll do is blood work

I've been on meds for almost 2 yrs and havent lost hardly any weight.Maybe 10 pounds. I seem to be dropping some now, without changing anything,so HOPEFULLY I'll lose a good bit
I can only hope lol
Last time I seen the DR,3 months ago,he put me on Wellbutrin XL...I had asked about diet pills and he said I couldnt take any,but said many people said Wellbutrin helped them to lose weight..???
oh,and I do take the meds in the morning. Mine says to take on an empty stomach and since I can't eat when I get up anyways,I just take it then. I didnt know it caused nightmares though. I do have some strange dreams, not nightmares but just weird dreams.

I'm sure they will do bloodwork, as far as the scans, I'm not sure, I've had everything froman ultrasound to an RAI scan but of course I had thyroid cancer so you probably won't need that one.

I finally got my appt. I go in Oct 18th. I went Tuesday and signed for my medical records and man,it was like pulling teeth. They didnt even want me to get them!! She kept saying "We will just fax them" After I told her 5 times the lady told me to have them in my hands when I come,if things get faxed they get misplaced, and to be safe and not looking for them, for me to bring them with me!
Then the other lady says she can mail them to the Dr...HELLO...I have told you I WANT THEM! THEY ARE MINE AND I WILL PICK THEM UP!! I got kinda rude with her,but sheesh, how many times do I have to tell her
I got a packet from the new DR to fill out. Man oh man....he wants to know everything!!!
I cant wait to go,I'm still nervous but I want to feel better already!!!
btw--When I could never get my Dr to call back,or his nurse to reschedule my appt....she called THE SAME DAY I went to sign for my med records and said I missed my appt...I said NO YOU cancelled my appt and never called me back after 4 attempts. She says well we can schedule one now,Said I had to have my bloodwork redone...?? I asked what the last results were and she didnt know...didnt have the paper in front of her. So,I'm already pissed at this office so I just say ok,and made 2 appts for next week! LOL....I'm not going, not calling...anything...she's wasted enough of my time,so I'm gonna waste theirs LOL...Is that mean?

Hope the new doc has you feeling better in no time.
As for making the appt and not keeping it or calling, some places have a sign/policy posted saying they can charge you if you fail to appear or don't cancel your appointment within a certain amount of time. I do understand why you want to get back at them, just don't want them getting one last stab at your pocketbook.

Seen my new Dr today. He's nice and very thorough. He asked lots and lots of questions.I have never been asked that many questions before....so this is good.
The bad news is....He said, from looking at my blood work from July,I should ALREADY be on a higher dosage (I take 1.37 mcg now).My blood pressre was high...140/110,my heart was racing,so he did an EKG! He is checking my lipids, metabolic rate (??),a few other things, and for diabeties
I am SO bummed! I know it needs to be done but I left there nearly in tears.
Maybe some of it is just routine. But we needed to do something about the high blood pressure and my thyroid ASAP!
He also said I should be receiving treatment for PCOS.i told him my gyn has always told me there wasnt much to do for it. he said "Well I'm not going tosay anything about another DR,but there is treatment, and we'll find one right for you." So I am glad of that.
I go back Nov 8th. I am so scared. I am 33 and cant IMAGINE having to take meds for high blood pressure.(it runs in my family though on my dads side, along with diabeties)
I swear,I never had any health probs other than allergies till I hit 30!! No wonder I get depressed around my birthday!!

My friend, try not to worry. It doesn't help your Blood Pressure. Medical tests and Doctor visits can be very, very scary...just remember - what is meant to be will be. We must not worry about things that we do not have control over. Have faith in yourself and your new Doctor. He sounds like he's going to take very good care of you. You are on the right path now...
Life is good. You're not alone.
