Default RhondaBob: What's emu oil, anyway?

    Hi, Rhonda!

I was in the local organic store yesterday and noticed they sell emu oil -- so I immediately thought of you!

Just what is it used for, anyway?

    Thanks!
    Mary

Mary, we sell emu oil in our store too and DH and I take it every day.

Basically emu oil is omega oil - it's omega 3, omega 6 and omega 9. People take it for a wide variety of things and when I first encountered emu oil I thought their claims were ridiculous as I thought no one product could cover so many problems. Now I know it's the omegas in the emu oil that is so beneficial.

Generally people take the emu oil capsules for arthritis, fibromyalgia, tendonitos, PMT, lowering cholesterol levels, general aches and pains, psoriases and eczema. People apply the oil to their skin for joint pain, sore muscles, dermatitis, burns, insect bites, psoriasis and eczema.

I take it for arthritis in my ankle, my DH takes it for his cholesterol. When I first started taking emu oil, I'd had tennis elbow for about 2 years. I'd tried everything to get rid of it - physiotheraphy, intrared treatment, doppler and massage, nothing worked. I decided it was something I'd have to live with. The day the arthritis pain went in my ankle, the teniis elbow disappeared and has never returned. I'm a total convert. DH has been taking it for about 8 months. He now has a normal cholesterol level for the first time in 30 years.

Many people also take it as a general tonic. We have a 94 year old gentleman who buys it from us. He's be taking it for 50 years and he rides a horse every day.

There are various qualities of emu oil. The medicinal one is super refined. Most other emu oil that is not super refined is cosmetic quality which is good for the skin, but won't do anything that the medicinal emu oil will.

lol!! Yep, it's the rendered fat of emus. They have a thick pad of fat on the top of their body, it's mainly from that. They kill emus for meat and they generallyl use the entire carcass for various things.

Thanks for the info, Rhonda! Sounds as though its a miracle oil -- ta da!! Think I'll give it a try, looking for the purer medicinal variety. I think that's what the store here has.

    Blessings,
    Mary

Rhonda - Is there anything specific that we can look for on the label that would help us to know that it's pure medicinal quality emu oil instead of cosmetic quality. I don't know that our health food store even carries this product, but the employees in that department are unfortunately not very knowledgable and dh and I would not trust much of anything they told us. Dh is having trouble lately from an old knee injury and after me telling him about the emu oil he's very interested in the product.

Also, are there any specific brands you might can suggest to us or websites where we could purchase it if we can't find it locally?

    Thanks!

The best brand is Emu Spirit, it's the top selling australian emu oil and the one that did all the research that got emu oil onto our Aust Government Therapeutic Goods list. Be wary though, there is an Emu-Spirit (with a dash, see below) American oil. Australian oil is supposed to be a better quality as our birds are fed their natural diet. The oil taken from the emus is effected a lot by the conditions they live in and even the time of their death, or if they've had chicks etc.

We sell Emu Spirit oil and I know it to be of good quality.

However, I've just checked online looking for American distributors of emu oil and came across this one that looks good:
    http://www.emuoil4health.com/skinconditions.html
They also have gelcaps. I take the caps, DH uses the caps and the straight oil on his knees.

The things to look for are:
    * the emu oil is in a sealed bottle
    * Super Refined
    *100% pure emu oil

SUPER REFINED oil is the best quality and would most certainly be medical oil. The site I gave above sells super refined oil.

This is the site of the oil we sell:
    http://www.emuspirit.com/

    NOT this site:
    http://www.emu-spirit.com/

Kim, if you can't get one you're happy with, let me know and I'll send you a bottle from here.

PS. I miss you and all the other ladies and will be back posting as soon as I can. I hope you're well.

Thank you, thank you, thank you! We'll be doing some investigating locally when we're able (don't know when that will be with it so close to time for the baby - will depend on how bad dh's pain gets).

Kim, check out http://www.emuoil4health.com/skinconditions.html for prices in the US.

We have a couple of ladies with FB buying oil from us and they say it works for them. One thing about emu oil, it doesn't work straight away. You need to get the level of oil up in your system before it will work. When I started taking it I took 9 capsules a day (3 x 3) and it took just under 3 weeks to start working. I take it for arthritis in my ankle but when I first started taking it I also had tennis elbow which I'd had treated with massage, drugs, physical therapy etc but it never left me. The day the arthritis pain in my ankle got better was the same day the tennis elbow left, never to return.

It is a good gentle therapy for a wide variety of ailments and as it is Omega 3, Omega 6 and Omega 9 oils it is excellent for your health and if you take the gel caps, it will reduce your cholesterol level. http://www.emuspirit.com/index.cfm?page=applications

Thanks Rhonda! Dh was diagnosed with chondromalacia (runner's knee - he used to run in marathons and run several miles a day, every day) when he lived on Oahu. He went through physical therapy and hasn't had any problems until just recently. We'd much rather him take something all-natural than a prescription drug. We looked through the links you gave me and he's definitely wanting to try it.
