Default Our soltuion for DD's eczema.

I just thought I'd share this with everyone in case someone here is dealing with eczema- I'm not saying you SHOULD try this, but it just might be something to consider.

DD gets eczema every winter. It was bad enough when she was an infant that the doc prescribed elidel. We used it a few times (never even got the script filled, just used some samples) and then the FDA issued a warning that it could cause cancer. Since her eczema waasn't the she-scratches-so-badly-she-is-getting-dangerous-infections type, we didn't think it warranted putting a carcinogen on our kid and we tossed all the rest of the stuff.

So we were left looking for another solution. Fewer baths/showers would help, but she is having no part of that. She is a water baby for sure. More lotion helps, but it just softens the dry itchy parts.

Then I stumbled upon somthing that seemed harmless enough to try (though I would not try it if she had any open wounds,) and it WORKED! It won't stop the underlying immune reaction that is causing the eczema, but when we use it, the eczema patches disappear, and so far, they haven't reappeared when we remember to use it.

It is vinegar. Just plain white vinegar. I add a good-sized splash of it to her bath water once or twice a week. Her once-dry patches of skin are now soft, smooth, and no longer red.

    Good ole' vinegar!

Oh way to go Kimberlina! That is worth knowing!

I suffered from it till I lived on my own in my late teens. It's a tough disease to deal with.

dd gets it only in the creases of her elbows and fingers. I had huge patches almost everywhere.

I'm going to keep this one in mind.

I found with dd, that salmon oil helps. If mine ever comes back I'll try the vineger and I'll pass it on to her.

I'm going to have to tell a friend this. She suffers horribly from exzema. Nothing prescribed to her works.

Glad you found a solution to work for your dd.

My daughter suffers from severe eczema. It is more severe in the colder months. I had to take her to the doctor before Christmas. She takes only about three showers a week since her skin is so dry. She scratches in her sleep. It helps to change the sheets often. When I took her to the doctor she wanted her to see a skin doctor and she talked about ellidel. Doctor told me that it was controversal and had been linked to cancer in a few people but she still wants me to consider it. No way am I going to let my 15 year old be exposed to something that could potentially cause cancer. I'm going to try the vinegar trick and see if that helps. It would be great if it did work. It would be an answered prayer.

Kay, I hope it will provide some relief for your daughter. I read about it on a parenting board a while ago and just never thought to mention it before, but it definitely does help my DD. Hope it works!

Thanks for the info, I have it on my forehead and I have tried several different creams and none seem to work for any amount of time. I will definately be trying the vinager. Thanks again.

Kimber, that's fabulous. Finding a simple cure is just the best.

I just wanted to add that we find the emu oil we sell in our store is also excellent for eczema, dematitis and psoriasis. We have many people - children and adult - who try the oil after having no success with prescribed treatments. It works in 100% of cases. Emu oil is the full range of omega oils - omega 3 omega 6 and omega 9. It's completely natural and can even be used on babies and animals.

Please contact me if you're thinking of buying emu oil. Some are not good. I'll let you know what kind to buy. You can get it on the internet.
BTW, this is not an advert for my store.

You're just trying to get me to spend money, Rhonda, I know it!

(I hope you know that I am just kidding. If we end up needing to try something else, I will definitely contact you about which brands of emu oil are good. Thanks!!!!)

I'm glad to know about this. I don't know anyone with this skin condition, but the next time someone mentions they have it, I'll be sure to pass the tip along.

kimber, I love your joking, don't worry about it. I think I'm a pretty good judge of character and I don't detect a mean bone in your body.

I do think it's time for you to splurge on a new outfit though.

WOW! Kim thanks for the info!! I take care of many babies and adults who have eczema. This will be so helpful. I studied about how the pH of the body is too acidic- causing reactions... if we make the body more alkaline... it will cure itself. So this is very interesting that the vinegar works. I think you're onto something here.

Interesting. We use Aquaphor on Patrick's skin, and it works well. If it ever stops working, we'll definitely be looking into the vinegar!
