elliptical machines
In another thread some of you said you have these. I am seriosly looking into buying one. Mike has ok'd this. It is going to be a Mother'sDay/ B-day gift from him and Alex. I have been ok'd to spend around $200. What do I need on this? Is that an ok amout for a quality machine? I don't want to spend a bunch in case I hate it. ( I have used my friend's and I do like using it but you know how it is when you buy exercise stuff
) I don't want to get a totally cheap one. I have been looking on e bay and have found one that looks good for the $$$ I can aford.

Any advice would be appreciated. TIA

I would try to find one that you can try out physically. Maybe you could find this brand/type at a store nearby, try it out, then decide to bid on it.
I only say this because we went to Sears knowing which model we wanted, tried it out and it didn't fit. The stride was too big for me and too small for dh, so we ended up getting a different model that had adjustable strides.
I'm a fan of Pro-Form equipment. We have a PF elliptical and recumbant bike.

ETA: I wanted to add, it's not like dh & I are miles apart in size either. He's 5'8" and I'm 5'5"

Are elliptical machines good if I don't want to put a lot of undue stress on my knees?

Why don't you try to get one for free on Freecycle.org ?
It's a Yahoo group where people give stuff away that they are no longer using. I got my treadmill from Freecycle.org

We have a Precor and love it! I am unfamiliar with the type you are getting, but I find the elliptical much easier for myself than running. I second that you really should "try before you buy". If you can afford the money and space, go for it!

My g/f is selling hers. Her's is the one I originally tried. I asked her about it. She had told someone else about it not knowing I was wanting one. The other girl is supossed to call her tonight. If she doesn't want it is's mine. Keep your fingers crossed.

My fingers are crossed in hoped that you get it.
I also have one and really like it. I agree with trying it on to fit before buying. Make sure you feel comfortable with it.~*Michelle*~
