Thyroid
Does anyone here suffer from thyroid problems? I have been have some strange symptoms lately and I can not think of anything else it might be. I don't want to over react or assume anything so I figured I would ask you guys if you have had issues with this problem.

Yep, I'm going through this right now. Mine may be postpartum related and then again it may be inherited. It's all still in the 'beginning' stages according to the doctors I've seen. I have the physical symptoms of an underactive thyroid (hair loss, I bruise easily and they heal slowly, my scalp is dry, I had an early delivery my last pregnancy, my mind is foggy, I have trouble concentrating sometimes, my memory is poor). However, my blood tests show that I have an overactive thyroid (I do not have any of the physical symptoms that point to that). I also have a nodule on my left thyroid. I had no clue it was there (not visible when you look at my throat), but my gyn doctor found it when examining my throat at my yearly checkup this summer.
I have read some great books from my local library and they have been very helpful. One I have checked out now is the Thyroid Disorders Sourcebook edited by Joyce Brennfleck Shannon.
The best thing to do is make an appointment with your doctor and have some simple blood tests that will show your thyroid hormone and function levels.

hi there, my mum has an underactive Thyriod, her symptoms were extreme tiredness, very dry skin especially her hands, bruises easily ( although she has always done this) - I know another symptom is weight gain for no apparent reason but she never had that she lost a lot of weight ( overactive symptoms) does any of your family have thyroid issues? It seems to run in familys - my mums mother and aunties all had thyroid issues
I agree with Quiltermom, ask your dr for a blood test
good luck

Yep I have hypothyroidism. Have since 1976. I have 3 sisters with eith hyper or hypo. One had a goiter. My mother was hyper and had her goiter taken care of in the 60's. It does run in family.
FernYes I'm out of my mind. It's a dark and scary place in there.

Yep, I have hypothyroid or underactive. The doctor found it with a bloodtest. My symptoms were hair loss that I have not grown back, very tired the mind wanted to do things but the body couldn't follow and fast weight gain. I have had three different strengths of pills. So far this last strength seems to be working but I have bloodwork every 6 months to see if I need a stronger dose. You will feel much better when you get on medication. Good luck and I wish you the best.

Good luck Robbin. Your doctor will do your blood tests, and then you'll know pretty quickly if it's thyroid.

DH is hypothyroid, it is in his family, his Mom has it, too.
We have blood tests every 6 months to track his levels, and it can get pretty frustrating when they're off.
Let us know how evrything turns out!
*hugs*

You can have subclinical thyroid problems without falling into the blood test range (sometimes symptoms are delayed). I was hyperthyroid with my first baby. I thought I had a neurological problem. I lost weight really quickly, had difficulty sleeping, was hot all of the time (usually am cold), had diarhea, and had lots of thoughts that resembled postpartum depression. I also had trouble with night vision that took a couple of years resolving itself. I also had tremors similar to those observed in people with Parkinson's disease. It's not fun, but I chose to wait it out instead of getting treated and eventually (other than a bit here and there) it resolved itself as well.
